Steve Sheridan

Steve Sheridan My political journey My interest in local issues started when I was asked to lead our local neighbourhood watch in 2007.

I enjoyed meeting my neighbours and listening to their issues although our budget and powers were very limited. Now that I have more time, I would like to be involved in both Ryde Town Council and the County Council. I have got to know this area quite well since moving to the Island in 2006 and would like to hear from residents who have questions or issues relating to local government.

Delighted for my friend, the brilliant Donna Jones - Police Commissioner Hampshire & IOW for polling 49.5% of the vote on the Island. Lib Dems pushed into last place by an unknown independent candidate.

Morton Road today. Accepting this as a common occurrence for half the year cutting the main route between Ryde and Sandown is not an option. Local resident Irene says she has never seen it this bad after living along the brook for 20 years. We know that the water levels in Brading marshes are kept at an artificially higher level than they were 10 years ago. Together with Cllr Ian Ward BEM - Sandown South and Bob Seely MP I have requested a meeting with the Environment Agency. I have also written to the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust to see how they manage the brook upstream.

Thank you to everybody who voted for me. I'm sorry that I shall not be representing you. I thoroughly enjoyed the campaign and learned a lot about Ryde and the Island. Well done to those who were elected to County and Town/Parish Councils and I look forward to following your progress. Thanks to my counting agent (son, Tim) and to all the great people who assisted with my first (and maybe not last) attempt to be elected.

I am very much in favour of saving Ryde’s historic buildings which reflect the wonderful story of our great Town but I also believe that Ryde Town Council (RTC) has a duty to spend your money carefully otherwise future generations will be left with a legacy of debt.

While Phil Jordan has been chair of RTC’s Finance Committee, they have in recent months purchased St. Thomas’s Church and Vectis Hall. The first purchase allowed the owner to almost triple his money in three years (£75,000 - £200,000). Was this a good deal for Ryde? The second building, which is derelict (picture), cost RTC £75,000 when nobody else would touch it with a barge pole. After buying it, the Council then held a consultation to see what residents wanted them to do with it. Cart before horse?

The Our Ryde duo of Jordan and McLagan now want RTC to purchase and repair Ryde Theatre which will cost £millions and I understand that they also want to spend even more public money on Appley Tower while at the same time taking on the running of Ryde Harbour from IW Council.

I admire their ambition but am concerned about how they will manage these projects - presumably even more staff will need to be employed - and how they will pay to refurbish them so that they can return to public use.

Mr. Jordan is proposing that RTC take on large loans to finance this property portfolio, loans which will have to be serviced and repaid by future Ryde residents. We are told that grants will be available to pay for the refurbishment but it seems optimistic to expect this magic tap to spout forth money indefinitely.
