Come and discover the Solent through a different lens at Appley Tower!
We’re delighted to be hosting the Bird Aware Solent Photography Exhibition, showcasing the winning photographs from the 2026 Bird Aware Solent Photography Competition.
Appley Tower is such a special and atmospheric space for displaying artwork and we think these beautiful photographs of the Solent’s birdlife look right at home here.
And there’s a lovely Appley Tower connection too… among the photographs are Sanderlings, while one of the four Appley Tower Beach Hut Hire that help support the Tower is also named Sanderling (hire for £35 per day).
So, if you’re enjoying a walk along Ryde seafront, why not pop in, have a look at the exhibition and take a moment to enjoy the views from the Tower?
Our current opening times, subject to volunteer availability, are:
• Monday–Wednesday 10.30am–3.30pm
• Friday 1pm–3.30pm
• Saturday 10am–12 noon
• Sunday 10.30am–1pm
Could you help us keep the Tower open?
We’re looking for 2 people who could spare 2.5 hours on a Friday afternoon or Sunday morning to join our lovely, friendly team of existing volunteers. It’s a great opportunity to spend a little time at one of Ryde’s most unusual landmarks and meet visitors from near and far.
We’ll be open until the end of October, before closing for the winter.
Are you an artist or photographer?
We’d also love to hear from anyone interested in displaying their artwork at Appley Tower. The space lends itself beautifully to exhibitions and we’re keen to make it a place where local creativity can be seen and enjoyed.
Come and see the photographs, enjoy the Tower and perhaps discover a few of the Solent’s feathered residents along the way!

What a way to start the day!
Appley Tower, Ryde, Isle of Wight at sunrise this morning, just hours after England's thrilling 3-2 victory over Mexico. Moments like these remind us how lucky we are to have this iconic landmark and beautiful coastline right on our doorstep.

A huge thank you to the fantastic pupils and staff from Ryde School who volunteered at Appley Tower as part of their Ut Prosim Morning ("That I May Serve").
The team gave up their time to welcome visitors to the Tower, help with cleaning and lend a hand with the many jobs that keep this much-loved landmark looking its best. Their enthusiasm, hard work and friendly smiles made a real difference.
As many of you know, Appley Tower is run almost entirely by volunteers. We simply don't have enough volunteers to open the Tower every day, so support like this is incredibly valuable and greatly appreciated.
We were especially touched by Ryde School's commitment to helping young people experience the importance of kindness, service and giving back to their community. It was wonderful to see these values in action and we hope the pupils enjoyed their morning as much as we enjoyed having them at Appley Tower.
Thank you once again to everyone involved, your efforts have helped preserve one of Ryde's most iconic landmarks for residents and visitors alike. We hope to welcome you back again soon!

National Volunteers’ Week

This week, we celebrated our amazing volunteers with a picnic at Mottistone Manor, kindly organised by Community Action Isle of Wight.

Our volunteers are at the heart of Appley Tower. Their dedication, enthusiasm and support make it possible for us to keep this much-loved local landmark open to the public. We simply couldn’t do it without them.

As a small thank you, we also offer our volunteers free beach hut hire and get together quarterly to catch up, share updates and celebrate everything they’ve helped us achieve.

A huge thank you to all our volunteers, both familiar faces and new ones, who joined us at Appley Tower last week. It was fantastic to see such a great turnout and community spirit. We’re really looking forward to working together and making Summer 2026 a brilliant season for the Tower.
