Volunteers' Week Day 6: Objects on Demand is a new changing exhibition in the Landing Gallery at St Albans Museum + Gallery, where anyone can choose an object from our collection they’d like to see on display.

Our volunteers supported the launch by selecting objects from the collection, preparing them for display, and researching and writing the object captions. Thank you to our volunteers for helping bring these stories to life!

And don't forget to come and check out Objects on Demand in the Landing Gallery.

Volunteers' Week Day 5: From school visits and family workshops to Roman soldiers and craft activities, we have a busy programme at St Albans Museums, and we’re lucky to have some fantastic volunteers who support these sessions, helping to bring history to life and inspiring our younger visitors to get creative. 🎨

Volunteers' Week Day 4: Over the past 12 months, our collections volunteers have been documenting and photographing objects from the map, local history, Salaman and archaeology collections. They are currently working with the accessories collection for an upcoming exhibition. 👗

Did you know that, to help us care for our collections, we also have volunteers taking part in the ‘deep clean’ of our museum spaces? 🧼 In 2025, they got into all the nooks and crannies of St Albans Museum + Gallery and this year they will turn their attention to Verulamium Museum.

Thanks to having a professional conservator on the volunteer team, the deep clean group have also been involved in conservation cleaning of one of the larger objects in the collection. 🧽

Volunteers' Week 3: Our volunteers were at the heart of our ‘A Growing City’ exhibition at St Albans Museum + Gallery. In fact, it was the idea of collections volunteer, Maureen (pictured here), who you can spot in the exhibition alongside photos of her younger self!

Maureen worked closely with the Museum team to shape the exhibition, with a further 7 volunteers undertaking exhibition research. The volunteer involvement didn’t stop there. Our regular Crafternoon volunteers helped us create and install displays of paper orchids, woolly cucumbers and crocheted tomatoes.

From early ideas to the final details, this really is an exhibition shaped by our volunteers! 🌱💛

Volunteers’ Week Day 2: We’re continuing to share the stories behind the incredible work of our volunteers and today it’s all about the dig.🏺

Museum volunteers have been involved in 2 phases of archaeological digs at the Rose and Crown during the past year. Last summer 14 volunteers picked up their shovels and trowels to help excavate 5 test pits. This year 42 volunteers were involved on the project, either welcoming schools to site, or getting their hands dirty while washing finds.

From digging to discovery, they’ve been a vital part the journey.

Volunteers’ Week is here! Over the past year, our incredible Museum volunteers have contributed 2,824 hours. That’s the equivalent of 1.5 full time members of staff!

They have volunteered across a range of activities from assisting in school and family workshops to collecting visitor surveys, washing archaeological finds to transcribing oral histories, deep cleaning our Museum spaces to documenting our collection. We simply couldn’t do it without them.💙

This is just the start, follow along this week as we shine a light on the amazing work our volunteers do.
