The meadow cutting today is unfortunately a very visible image of this summer's drought. The park landscape looks unrecognisable from previous years and we desperately need rain.

The meadow grass will have its annual cut today. And in other news...can you spot our new information board in the park?

An Update on the Woodland Park Pond

If you have walked recently in the Woodland Park you may have noticed that, following the recent spell of exceptionally hot and dry weather, the new pond at has largely dried out.

While it may look concerning, this is actually an expected response to such prolonged dry conditions. The deeper sections of the pond have a natural clay lining, protected by a layer of subsoil, which helps retain water. Once the autumn rains return, we fully expect the pond to refill naturally.

Even in its current dry state, the pond continues to provide valuable habitat for wildlife. In fact, the Freshwater Habitats Trust advises that around 40% of lowland countryside ponds dry out during drought years, yet these temporary ponds are often among the richest habitats for plants and animals.

As the pond matures over the coming years, we will continue to monitor water levels and habitat development to ensure it delivers the greatest possible benefits for wildlife and visitors alike.

We have an abundance of butterflies across the woodland meadows this year, which is wonderful to see.

How many of Britain's 60 (ish?) species can you spot there?

Today's Butterfly of the Day is the Marbled White.

Being the only butterfly in the UK with these distinctive black & white markings, it's hard to confuse the Marbled White with other species.

The Marbled White also loves to sunbath early in the morning and in the late afternoon. This is the best time to take a photo - as they take little notice of observers during their sunbathing times!

Be great to hear about what other butterfly species in the Woodland Park that you can find. Thanks for sharing your spots!

The time capsule in Jersey Farm Woodland Park has had a make over. Why not take a look and include it in your next walk in the park.

It's located here:

Surprisingly we have very little information about who was involved in burying it, or what is in it....

If you know any information about the time capsule, please share it here.

After a morning of volunteering in the Woodland Park, there was time for a cup of tea on this lovely vantage spot....then it was off to clean our village sign.

Thank you to Kate who has now offered to clean the sign when it next gets dirty. It's actually looking a bit weathered with paint peeling off. We will raise this at the next Parish Council Meeting and see what can be done to restore it.

If someone else could volunteer to keep the other Sandridge sign (as you come in from the Nomansland side) clean, that would be a great help.

Thanks to all our volunteers. You guys make such a huge difference.
