It’s not just where you go. It’s who you go with. ⛰️

One of the best things about Army Reserve life is the people you get to share it with.

During a recent adventurous training weekend, the Battery Sergeant Major and a junior officer from 216 Battery swapped their usual duties for a challenge in the mountains.

Different ranks, different responsibilities, but out on the hillside they’re sharing the same experience.

It’s weekends like these that help you get to know the people you serve alongside, build friendships and make memories that stay with you long after you’ve headed home.

Because being part of 103 Regiment is about more than what you do. It’s about who you do it with.

What’s the best adventure you’ve shared with your mates?

👀 Like food? How about cooking up a bit of adventure? 👨‍🍳

Being an Army Reserve Chef in the 103 RA isn't your average weekend in the kitchen.

One weekend you could be cooking for fellow Reservists on exercise. The next, you could be putting your skills to the test somewhere completely different. 🍔🏕️

From feeding hungry Gunners after a long day in the field to formal events marking historical dates, Army Chefs play a big part in life at 103 Regiment Royal Artillery.

🔧 You don't need to know how. That's what training is for.

Ever wondered how soldiers learn to look after their weapons?

It starts with the basics.

Every Reserve Gunner learns how to safely handle, strip, clean and reassemble their SA80 r***e. And you don't need any previous experience.

Our instructors demonstrate each stage, explain what you're doing and why it matters, then give you the chance to practise under supervision until you're confident doing it yourself.

It's one of many skills you'll learn from scratch in the Army Reserve.

💬 What military skill would you be most interested in learning?

🎯 SOME CHALLENGES SET THE BAR HIGHER THAN OTHERS.

And sometimes, quite literally!

From learning the basics to tackling high birds, a recent clay shooting session gave our Reservists the chance to test their reactions, judgement and marksmanship against some challenging targets.

With expert instruction on hand, it was an opportunity to develop new skills, build confidence and push beyond what they'd tried before.

That's one of the best things about being an Army Reservist. You get opportunities to challenge yourself in ways you might never experience in your normal working week.

And you don't need to be an expert to give something new a go, you never know what you're capable of until try.

Why would you design a gun that needs a wheel removing? 🤔

It's a fair question, and one that often comes up when people see our Gunners bringing the L118 Light Gun into action.

The answer comes down to one of its biggest strengths: portability.

The L118 was designed to be light and compact enough to be towed across difficult terrain or transported beneath a helicopter. 🚁

Part of that design is its narrow wheelbase. The trade-off? There isn't enough room to rotate the barrel through 180 degrees from its travelling position without temporarily removing one wheel.

It's not a design mistake. It's a deliberate compromise that helps make the gun so versatile.

And for our Reserve gun detachments, removing and replacing that wheel is simply another part of a well-rehearsed drill.

Sometimes good engineering is about knowing which compromises are worth making.

💬 Did you know why the L118 has a removable wheel?

🎯 Standing. Kneeling. Prone. How steady is your aim?

It’s one thing hitting a target when you’re comfortable. It’s another when you have to change position and still make every shot count.

As a Reservist, your marksmanship is tested from different firing positions, including standing, kneeling and prone.

Each brings its own challenges. Finding a stable position, controlling your breathing and maintaining accuracy all matter when you’re behind the r***e.

And being a Gunner doesn’t mean you only train on the big guns. R***e marksmanship is a core soldiering skill, with Reservists expected to meet the same standards as their Regular counterparts.

💬 Which firing position do you find the most challenging, and why?

🌅 Not your average weekend morning.

While most people are enjoying a lie-in, our Gunners are getting ready for another day on the guns.

Early starts, cold mornings and long days in the field. It’s all part of life in the Royal Artillery Reserve.

But it’s also the chance to do something completely different from your day job, work alongside your mates and be part of a gun detachment that relies on everyone pulling their weight. 💪

Fancy swapping the occasional lie-in for something a bit different?

🪢 Learning the ropes. Quite literally.

Adventurous Training isn't just about getting out into the hills for the weekend.

Some of our Reservists have been developing their mountain skills, with some working towards Mountain Leader qualifications.

That means learning and practising skills that have a use well beyond a weekend away with the Army Reserve.

Navigation. Managing people in the mountains. Making decisions. Looking after a group. And, as pictured here, getting to grips with ropework.

They're skills you can develop in uniform and take back into civilian life.

Not everything you learn in the Army stays in the Army.

One round is a shot. This is training. 💥

Not something you normally get to see.

Inside each L118 cartridge case are the propellant charges used to fire the round. The charge can be selected to meet the requirements of the fire mission.

And judging by the number of cases here, there’s been plenty of opportunity to put those drills into practice.

For our Reservists, live firing means repetition. More time on the gun. More chances to practise the drills. More experience as part of a gun detachment.
