On Wednesday night, I joined the staff of Broad Oak Manor Nursing home for their leaving do, as the home has now closed its doors. 💙

It was an emotional evening. So many of these wonderful carers and colleagues have given years some decades, of their lives to looking after our residents with kindness, patience and genuine love. Seeing them together one last time, hugging, laughing and shedding a few tears, really brought home just what a close-knit team they were.

As Cabinet Member for Adult Social Care and Health, I’ve seen first-hand how hard everyone at Broad Oak Manor worked, right up to the very last day, to make sure residents were settled and cared for during the closure. That dedication doesn’t just disappear because a building closes.

To every member of staff thank you. You made a real difference to people’s lives, and that matters more than any building ever could. Wishing you all the very best for whatever comes next. 💐

🚮 A huge thank you to everyone who took part in Saturday's litter pick in Parr.

Together we collected a significant amount of rubbish that would otherwise have been left in our streets, parks and green spaces.

Among the items found were a number of nitrous oxide canisters. Nitrous oxide misuse is not a harmless activity. Inhaling it can lead to serious health consequences, including loss of consciousness, breathing difficulties, nerve damage, and in some cases life-changing neurological problems. The loss of control and dizziness it causes can also result in serious accidents and injuries.

When these canisters are thrown onto our streets, parks and green spaces, they create an additional hazard for residents, children and wildlife. They are a visible reminder of anti-social behaviour and show a lack of respect for the communities we all share.

Thank you to everyone who helped today. By working together, we can take pride in our area and send a clear message that littering and anti-social behaviour have no place in Parr. 👏💙

🚨 Emergency Announcement 🚨

🏗️ A dangerous threat affecting all residents of Garswood, Rainford, Rainhill

It gives me great sorrow and regret to inform residents today of the sad news of the passing of new Labour policy that will result in the further destruction of green spaces across our borough, and in particular in Garswood.

Today, Labour have announced that any developments near train stations, even on green belt land, will get an automatic approval by the government.

This means that the green belt surrounding Garswood, Rainford, and Rainhill, where some of the last few open spaces of our borough remain, will soon turn into construction sites for thousands of copy & paste new build boxes. A death sentence for our green spaces.

By using a blanket top-down policy, Labour have ignored the individual needs of local areas, instead using a one-size-fits-all approach to meet their bonkers housing targets.

I must clarify that this is a decision taken by the Labour government, rather than St Helens Borough Council. As it is an update to NPPF guidance and controlled by Labour nationally rather than us locally, ultimately as a council we have no say in the matter.

The protection of green spaces is a top priority for our new Reform UK administration. We've recently passed our Green Space Emergency motion, which seeks to provide some protection at least to our most beloved parks and playing fields from Labour's concreting campaign. I'm also concerned about the existing infrastructure which can't cope, especially our road traffic and access to oversubscribed GP services and dentists.

For anyone living in Garswood, Rainford, and Rainhill, I'd encourage you to write to your MP to ask them to object to this Labour decision. I shall certainly do so over the coming days.
