Talland House

Talland House The beautiful Edwardian Villa where Virginia Woolf spent many of her childhood summers and which became the inspiration for her novel ‘To The Lighthouse’.

Talland House is a private house with multiple tenants and no car access so please respect them when visiting. The front lawn is welcoming and residents are currently undertaking re-establishing the garden using references from Virginia and plants suitable to the time when she stayed in St Ives. You get the best view coming up the drive way at the start of Talland Road by the Harbour Hotel. It is

slightly tucked away but for Woolfians well worth finding. The residents working on the project hope to raise money to speed up the garden's progress with information about it.

Happy birthday to Virginia Woolf. Frost scattered the lawn with frost like Icing sugar on a birthday cake and the artemisia, whose smell reminded her of the garden at Talland, used the frost as camouflage!

Half Term at Talland meant we had a little helper from the house in the garden. We tidied up her fairy garden and made animal habitats in the 'grotto.' This area once had water running thorough it and a little pond. Sadly the water stopped around the time a housing development went up further up the hill. It is still a magical corner of the garden though.

A plaque to commemorate Virginia Woolf on the house is getting closer to becoming a reality. The planning approval process is now live and welcomes comments on the Cornwall Council website; the more comments of approval the better chance it has of being passed quickly and to show how important the Virginia Woolf connection in St. Ives is to so many people. You need to register on the Cornwall Council website to be able to leave a comment but you should be able to do so from anywhere in the world.
