Tom Palmer Book Tour: Location Update 📖

Please be advised that the visit from children’s author, Tom Palmer, on Monday 1 June 2026 that was originally planned to be held at Saltash Town Council Library Hub, will now be held at a local primary school and will not be open to members of the public.

This change is due to the limited capacity of the temporary Saltash Library space, which is unable to accommodate this event. We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause.

If you would like to attend at another location, Tom Palmer will be visiting nearby libraries on the same day (1 June) at the following times:

📍 Liskeard Library – 11.30am
📍 Torpoint Library – 2.30pm

During these sessions, Tom will meet young readers and introduce his brand-new book, If the Invader Comes. This event is ideal for children aged 7+ who enjoy history, mystery, and page-turning stories.

Saltash–Plougastel Twinning Event: Celebrating 40 Years of Friendship 🇫🇷

Saltash Town Council is delighted to have recently renewed our Charter of Friendship with our twinned town, Plougastel‑Daoulas, marking an incredible 40 years of connection and shared history. 📜

You can read more about this special occasion in our latest press release:https://www.saltash.gov.uk/edit/stuploads/9654_1620711417.pdf

Mayor, Cllr Brian Stoyel, reflected on the occasion:

“Another very successful twinning weekend, with the signing of a new pledge to continue for another forty years. A glorious weekend, with happy memories for all. Thank you to the organising team.”

The event brought together representatives from both towns, including Mayor, Cllr Brian Stoyel, Mayoress, Maxine Stoyel, and First Deputy Mayor of Plougastel, Patricia Henaff. They were joined by members of Saltash Town Council, including Deputy Mayor Cllr Brenda Samuels, alongside the Town Clerk. A special highlight was staff member Stephen Blake, who stepped in as Town Crier and delivered a fantastic cry to mark the occasion.

This memorable event was a true collaborative effort between the Twinning Association, Plougastel‑Daoulas and Saltash Town Council, bringing communities together to celebrate a longstanding friendship.

🪙🍊 Saltash Penny and Fruit Throwing Event 2026! 🍊🪙

Join us for this year’s much-loved Penny and Fruit Throwing Event, where the Mayor of Saltash, Cllr Brian Stoyel, and the Civic Party will throw hot pennies and fruit from the Guildhall windows.

📆 Friday 12 June
🕑 7:10pm
📍 The Guildhall, Lower Fore Street

This traditional ceremony dates back to the 13th century, when wealthy townspeople threw coins and pieces of fruit from the Guildhall’s first-floor windows to children gathered below. It was a gesture of generosity and celebration within the community.

While its exact origins have been lost over time, the tradition is closely linked to the historic “Mayor Choosing” ceremony and the granting of town charters in the medieval period.

It is a fantastic event for all the family, and we would love to see you there.

WWI Pebble Memorial Restoration – Thursday 28 May

Saltash Town Council would like to inform residents that the final stage of restoration work on the First World War Pebble Memorial, located in the Memorial Peace Garden at Alexandra Square, will take place on Thursday, 28 May.

The 141 restored pebbles will be reinstalled on Thursday between 10am and 4pm as part of a collaborative project between Saltash Town Council and former members of the Saltash Great War Commemoration Committee (SGWCC).

Residents may recall that the pebbles were carefully removed by South West Surfacing Specialists in September 2025, in preparation for repainting by David Whittley to preserve their original designs.

The Mayor, Cllr Brian Stoyel, former members of the SGWCC, and press representatives will be in attendance on the day. Members of the public are still very welcome to visit the area but are kindly asked to be mindful of the work taking place.

We thank residents for their patience and support throughout the restoration process and look forward to unveiling the completed memorial soon.
