Saltburn Cliff Tramway

Saltburn Cliff Tramway Saltburn Cliff Tramway is Britain's oldest water balanced cliff funicular. Saltburn's Cliff Tramway links the Spa town of Saltburn to the pier and promenade.

NOTICE - The tramway is currently closed for seasonal maintenance. Take a ride on Britain's oldest water balanced cliff funicular. Opened in 1884 to replace an earlier vertical hoist the cliff tramway is probably the oldest of its type still operating. The two cars, each fitted with a 1000 gallon water tank, run on parallel tracks. The car at the top of the 71% incline has it’s tank filled with wa

ter until it overbalances the weight of the car 120ft below and gently descends while the lower car ascends. When the car reaches the bottom its water is re-pumped to the top and the process begins all over again. The cars are controlled by a brakeman at the top. The 10-12 seater cars were rebuilt to the original Victorian design for the Saltburn 150 celebrations in 2011.

πŸš‹ Here's a closer look at the steel undercarriages being lifted from the tracks during the removal of the tramway's carriages last week - it's a rare sight to see them separated from the timber structures passengers ride in!

The steel frames you can see below remain in very good condition and will continue to be used in the future 😊

We’ve had a number of questions about the tramway carriages which were removed from site this week as part of the ongoing programme of improvements at the Tramway.

The outer (wooden) carriages were installed in 2010 and, since then, have transported more than 2.5 million passengers. Due to the Tramway’s exposed seafront location, the timber carriage bodies are particularly susceptible to the effects of salt air, wind and weather and, combined with the volume of use over many years, this has led to deterioration of the timber frames.

Following detailed inspection and the process of dismantling and lifting the carriages from their undercarriages, it became clear that the timber structures are no longer structurally sound and cannot be safely retained longer term in their current form and can only be disposed of. However, the steel undercarriages – which are essential for safety - remain in very good condition and will continue to be used.

Importantly, wherever possible, historic and original elements are being carefully retained, including stained glass windows and surviving historic hardware. These features will be incorporated into the new carriages. The existing stained-glass windows, originally designed and installed in 1991 by local artist Chloe Buck, will be reconditioned and transferred into the new carriages.

Rebuilding the carriages now will ensure the long-term safety, reliability and future of the Tramway, allowing it to continue operating for generations to come while respecting and preserving its historic character.

πŸš‹ There's been quite the sight to see at the Saltburn Cliff Tramway today as the iconic carriages have been removed from the tracks after more than 15 years of service and seeing an estimated 2.5 million passengers through their doors.

In the coming months the carriages will be replaced, but don't worry - they'll still have the same visual style you've come to know and love, with the only major change being an increase in the size of the stained glass windows to offer its visitors an even better view of the seaside and cliffs while they travel 😊

❓Have you ever seen a picture of the original cliff lift? Built in 1870 and operational until 1883, this was how people made their way between the upper and lower promenades of Saltburn in the Victorian era. It's strange to see how different it looks compared to the tramway we all know and love!

πŸš‹ The vertical lift was condemned and demolished in 1883, making way for the tramway to replace it just 10 months later in 1884.
