Dear Editor, Back in February I hosted a meeting in Saltford Hall to give the public a chance to discuss in an open forum their opinions on the proposed 1650 houses to be built on Greenbelt land between Keynsham and Saltford. We also gave some time to the A4 bus lane proposals. BBC Points West

SALTFORD MAKES HISTORY

After a dramatic recount that went on into the early hours of Friday morning the nail biting bye election was finally called in favour of Independent Candidate and Saltford’s own Chris Warren, who scraped through with a FOUR vote margin over firm favourite Hossein Pirooz who was representing the incumbent Liberal Democrats.
It is the first time ever an Independent has been elected to represent the village at the Guildhall.

In this lop sided contest where a well funded Lib Dem campaign bombarded the electorate with an avalanche of leaflets and an army of door knockers much to the annoyance of many, the campaign was not without controversy.

From the anonymous X account that threatened to derail the Independent to the alleged Bogus Solicitor Lib Dem revelations the drama continued right through to the end when a recount was requested by the Lib Dems after they were beaten by a razor thin four vote margin by Chris.

One ballot paper for Chris was found to be possibly ‘spoiled’ but after careful consideration the retuning officer allowed it to count.

Shortly before 1am the result was confirmed that Chris had indeed won this historic by election-the first time Saltford Hall had been used for an official count.

In third place was the Conservative, fourth Reform, fifth Green and coming in a distant last place the Labour candidate who only polled 60 votes.

Chris said after the declaration-

‘I’d like to thank all those who voted for me, my group of helpers, the rest of the candidates for standing and the Returning Officer and his team for conducting the election in a fair and open manner’
‘I now need to meet with my fellow supporters to chat about how we begin to get things done…’

The excitement was over as people drifted off into the January night.

Spent a pleasant couple of hours delivering leaflets around Bath Rd and The Glen. Spoke to Jason here, a builder who simply cannot believe what is being planned with the B&NES WECA bus lanes. Although he was smiling here he is not a happy bunny.

Let me remind you of the text from my election leaflet from May 2023-

"I will oppose the crazy idea of dedicated bus lanes through Saltford. This West of England Combined Authority proposal will cause chaos and cost millions compared to a reopened Saltford Station.
B&NES ruling party’s policies of reducing the use of private vehicles means that we cannot rely on their elected councillors standing up to this further imposition on our village’s congested access road."
