🦔 🦔 🦔 Help protect Saltford’s Hedgehogs this fireworks season! 🦔 🦔 🦔 Residents may be thinking ahead about creating bonfires as part of fireworks celebrations, so SPC's added some important hedgehog-friendly advice to our Firework-Friendly Neighbour article 🎆

Hedgehogs may mistake bonfire piles for a safe place to nest or hibernate, so please remember to STOP, MOVE and CHECK before lighting a bonfire. Just a few minutes could save a life!

We're getting ready to keep the highway network moving this winter.

Our nine gritters are doing a dry run this evening, making sure they're ready and working after their summer services.

Salt barns have been topped up, and we're refilling more than 430 grit bins across Bath & North East Somerset.

🌷🌼 A huge thank you to the Saltford4Nature (S4N) volunteers, who have planted around 300 spring bulbs this week!
🌱 Over the coming weeks, the volunteer team will be planting another 700+ bulbs, helping to make Saltford even more beautiful and wildlife-friendly 💚

Saltford Parish Council was delighted to award a grant to fund the cost of the bulbs for this fantastic environmental initiative. Thank you to everyone involved for their time to make a difference to our local environment.

As well as brightening up the area in springtime, the flowers will provide a valuable source of food for pollinators.

🌺 Remembering Saltford’s fallen: Ahead of this year’s Remembrance commemorations, SPC has been supporting the Saltford Poppy Project by helping to link the addresses recorded on SPC's War Memorial plaques with wreaths to be displayed at the homes of some of Saltford’s fallen.

One address, Broadmoor Cottage, proved something of a mystery - until a knowledgeable volunteer from Saltford Environment Group (SEG) helped uncover a simple typography error on SPC's plaque. The address should have read Roundmoor Cottage!

Further research confirmed the story of Lance Sergeant Harold Andrews, who was just 21 when he died of his wounds on 23 November 1917.

But where exactly was Roundmoor Cottage where he lived?

Once again, SEG research helped piece together the history. Although the four 'Roundmoor Cottages' may no longer exist (see comments), an Ordnance Survey map from 1937 and Post Office records helped identify their likely location near where Norman Road joins the A4, on the opposite side of Bath Road. Older maps show the name Roundmoor dating back to the mid-19th century, originally referring to a much larger area of fields (pictured).

🌺 As we approach Remembrance Sunday, several wreaths bearing the names of the fallen will be displayed in the village, helping us remember those who gave their lives.

Our sincere thanks go to the SEG volunteer who helped solve this mystery, all the Poppy Project volunteers involved, and the residents who have kindly given permission for wreaths to be displayed at or near their properties.

🎆 Planning where to watch fireworks this year, or need to know when they’re happening so you can get pets safely indoors and turn up the radio? 🐾 Saltford Sports Club and Saltford School PTA (ticketed) are hosting events, and there are other nearby displays that may be audible in Saltford.
