Every year the Town Council provides some funding for community projects in the town. The Council has adopted a set of agreed criteria which successful applicants must meet and aims to support sustainable local projects that improve the quality of life for local people.

𝐀𝟏 𝐁𝐢𝐠𝐠𝐥𝐞𝐬𝐰𝐚𝐝𝐞 𝐍𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐡 𝐑𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐭𝐨 𝐒𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐲 𝐑𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐮𝐫𝐟𝐚𝐜𝐢𝐧𝐠

Resurfacing on the A1 will be carried out northbound between Biggleswade North Roundabout and Sandy Roundabout. Once complete, drivers will benefit from the A1 remaining in a safe and serviceable condition.

We plan to complete this work over two nights starting 𝐖𝐞𝐝𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐝𝐚𝐲 𝟏𝟕𝐭𝐡 𝐉𝐮𝐧𝐞 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟔. We will work between 𝟗𝐩𝐦 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝟓𝐚𝐦, weather permitting.

Closures and diversions
To carry out the work safely, we will need to close the A1 northbound between Biggleswade North Roundabout and Sandy Roundabout and divert traffic as follows:

• From Biggleswade North Roundabout, head southbound on the A1 to Baldock Services (Junction 10 A1(M))
• Traffic will be diverted off the motorway at A1(M) junction 10
• Following the A507 to Clophill Roundabout, take the third exit onto the A6 northbound
• At the Elstow Interchange take the fourth exit onto the A421 eastbound to the A1 Black Cat Roundabout
• At Black Cat Roundabout, head north to Wyboston, take the exit slip on Great North Road
• At the A428 Wyboston Roundabout take the fourth exit and return southbound on the A1
• Continue Southbound to Sandy where the diversion ends

A1 Southbound Beeston local diversion:

• Traffic should continue southbound on the A1 and take the first left onto Station Road into Sandy
• Follow the B1042 to the A603 roundabout, then onto Vinegar Hill and finally Beeston Road

Resident Access – via Upper Caldecott on the route below

Residents will be given access via Biggleswade Road on the A1 following the route below:
Hill Lane – Hitchin Road – Biggleswade Road – this is to avoid stopping on a roundabout

Please note emergency vehicles will have access through the works with caution.

𝐀𝟏 𝐬𝐨𝐮𝐭𝐡𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐝 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐧𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐡𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐝 𝐛𝐞𝐭𝐰𝐞𝐞𝐧 𝐖𝐚𝐧𝐬𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐝 𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐀𝟏(𝐌) 𝐣𝐮𝐧𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝟏𝟕 (𝐅𝐥𝐞𝐭𝐭𝐨𝐧 𝐏𝐚𝐫𝐤𝐰𝐚𝐲 𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞) 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐬𝐮𝐫𝐯𝐞𝐲𝐬

We plan to carry out surveys on the A1 in both directions between Wansford Interchange and A1(M) junction 17, Fletton Parkway Interchange.

These surveys will help us plan the replacement of the culverts that carry Billing Brook under the A1 at Water Newton. This work will help keep the road safe and reliable and make it better able to cope during bad weather, incidents, high traffic levels and future roadworks.

We plan to complete this work over nine nights between 𝐒𝐚𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐝𝐚𝐲 𝟏𝟑𝐭𝐡 𝐉𝐮𝐧𝐞 and 𝐌𝐨𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐲 𝟐𝟐𝐧𝐝 𝐉𝐮𝐧𝐞 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟔. We will work overnight between 𝟗𝐩𝐦 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝟓𝐚𝐦, weather permitting.

Closures and diversions
To carry out the work safely, we will need to close the A1 at various locations, and divert traffic as detailed in the image below.

Please note that access will be maintained for emergency vehicles throughout the closure.

Before you cast your line, you'll need a 𝐅𝐑𝐄𝐄 fishing permit from Sandy Town Council.

To apply for or renew your permit, please provide:

✅ A copy of your Environment Agency Rod Licence
(Children under 13 do not require a rod licence. Young people aged 13–16 will need a Junior Rod Licence.)

✅ Proof of your current address in Sandy or Beeston

📢𝐒𝐚𝐟𝐞𝐭𝐲 𝐑𝐞𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫📢

As temperatures continue to rise, please remember to stay safe in the heat. Drink plenty of water, take cool showers and wear sunscreen to protect yourself.

Please do not be tempted to swim in the River Ivel — the water is extremely dangerous.

If you see someone struggling in the water, call 999 immediately and ask for the Fire Service if the incident involves rivers, lakes or reservoirs. Do not enter the water yourself while waiting for emergency services. Instead, encourage the person to float on their back and keep talking to them until help arrives.

A rescue throwline is available at the Mill Pond and could help in an emergency. Keep the casualty in sight so emergency crews can locate them as quickly as possible.

Planned road closures and diversion routes at Black Cat junction between 𝐅𝐫𝐢𝐝𝐚𝐲 𝟐𝟗𝐭𝐡 𝐌𝐚𝐲 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐌𝐨𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐲 𝟏𝟓𝐭𝐡 𝐉𝐮𝐧𝐞 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟔.

During this period, the A1 northbound and southbound will be closed on three occasions, the A421
eastbound will close on one occasion and the A1 northbound only will be closed on one occasion.

These closures are needed so that we can continue making progress on the new junction and associated
structures at Black Cat. For the safety of both road users and our workforce, temporary traffic management will need to be in place while these works are carried out. During the closures, we’ll be completing:
✔️ drainage works in the central reserve of the A1
✔️ kerb installation beneath the western bridge at Black Cat junction

These improvements are vital to support the long-term upgrades planned for the junction, helping to
improve safety, reduce congestion, and create smoother journeys for all road users.

We are thrilled to announce that the referendum for the Sandy Neighbourhood Plan has passed with a resounding YES and been adopted with 88.8% of the vote.

Thank you to all who took the time to vote and support your vision for a vibrant and sustainable future in Sandy. Your voices were heard and together with the policies contained in the NHP we can work towards creating a community that reflects our shared values and aspirations.

The Neighbourhood Plan provides us with a step forward in shaping our town, helping to improve local amenities and preserve the natural environment around us.

Our thanks go to the Neighbourhood Plan Working Group made up of local residents and councillors for their hard work in making this happen. 💚🌿
