Crawick Multiverse Crawick Multiverse, a 55-acre art land in the South of Scotland, was designed by world-renowned land artist Charles Jencks in a former open cast coal mine.

UPPER NITHSDALE DARK SKY EXPERIENCE
Friday 16th October 2026

We are back at The Coalface preparing for our next Upper Nithsdale Dark Sky Experience.

An evening of dark skies, stars and toasted marshmallows ahead at Crawick Multiverse.

Will we see an aurora tonight? We’ll report back later!

⭐️ 7.30pm session - SOLD OUT!

📸 10pm session - a couple of places left on the late night Astrophotography session if you want to join us from 10pm-midnight. Enjoy Hot Chocolate and marshmallows at 9.30pm too. Book online in advance.

‼️ 📸 FINAL PLACES REMAINING 📸‼️

We are now down to the final few places remaining on the late night Astrophotography and UV Landscape Photography session with Mike Bolam this Friday, 16th October.

If Saturday night is anything to go by, it will be a great opportunity to enjoy the dark skies and pick up some advice about how to capture the moment on your camera or mobile phone.

This informal session will run from 10pm until midnight. Feel free to come early and enjoy Hot Chocolate and toasted marshmallows before you start!

We can’t promise clear skies, an aurora or The Milky Way, but we got all three on Saturday night, so who knows what we’ll see on Friday! See previous posts for photos of last weekend.

The early evening stargazing session with Elizabeth Tindal, Freelance Ranger, is now fully booked, but Elizabeth will be around for the late night session with Mike and will be happy to share her knowledge of the dark skies with you too!

OUTDOOR ADVENTURES

What are you up to during the October break?

If you’re looking for a family adventure involving lots of fresh air, somewhere to explore and freedom to walk (or just relax), come and visit us at Crawick Multiverse.

It’s a playground like no other, so come and let your family run round the spiral galaxies, march up the North-South Line and take in the views from the Belvedere and Void at the top of the site.

Bring your family, your friends, the dog and a picnic and you see where the day takes you!

We are open from 10am every day throughout October, so wrap up and come and join us!

Tickets can be bought online in advance or at The Coalface on arrival.

We sell snacks and hot and cold refreshments if you need a pre-walk cuppa or a post-walk hot chocolate!

GATHERINGS AT THE COALFACE
Upper Nithsdale Dark Sky Experience

The Coalface became a hub for stargazers and budding photographers during our recent dark sky experience.

Visitors gathered for introductory talks and returned for hot chocolate, toasted marshmallows and the opportunity to browse through their newly created dark sky albums.

⭐️ With thanks to our own stars, Dane and Erin, in The Coalface for looking after everyone on the night and for keeping everyone equipped with torches, hot drinks and marshmallows too!

AFTERNOON AT THE AIRTS

We started our Upper Nithsdale Dark Sky Experience at A' the Airts Community Arts Centre in Sanquhar on Saturday afternoon.

We are always delighted to welcome colleagues from the The Open University in Scotland and The Open University to support our events and this was no exception.

Dr Velislava (Veli) Ilieva, Postdoctoral Research Associate of The MoonRISE Project and Dr Emma Johanna Puranen, Postdoctoral Research Associate in Astrobiology Ethics with Astrobiology spoke passionately about their work at the OU and delivered a fascinating presentation entitled THE NEXT GIANT LEAP: EXPLORING SPACE RESPONSIBLY.

An inquisitive audience kept the Q&A session going for over 30mins before taking a break for Afternoon Tea.

Geoffrey Lindop, local author of The Dark Sky at Night: Tourists Delight, then shared his love of the Dark Skies and Science Fiction with the audience. Another engaged Q&A session brought the formal part of the afternoon to a close.

Visitors then relaxed in the cafe listening to a themed set of songs performed by local artist, Molly McTeir, before heading up to Crawick Multiverse to enjoy the rest of the Dark Sky Experience with Freelance Ranger, Elizabeth Tindal, and local photographer, Mike Bolam.

Our thanks to Yvonne and everyone who contributed and joined us at A’ the Airts.

Upper Nithsdale Dark Sky Experience

While some visitors started their third session of the day with us at 10pm, others were just joining us for the first time. Following a quick hot chocolate and a marshmallow (or two!), everyone was eager to get their cameras out!

With starry skies, an aurora and The Milky Way to capture, there was plenty to see and lots of scope to experiment, while local photographer, Mike Bolam, was on hand to offer some practical demonstrations, tips and advice.

The group also experimented with UV torches and enjoyed revealing and capturing photographs of the hidden world under the UV light.

Elizabeth Tindal, Freelance Ranger, also continued to share her knowledge and expertise of the dark skies with the late evening group.

What a great night and a lovely group of visitors!

We had a fantastic day welcoming you along to A' the Airts Community Arts Centre and Crawick Multiverse on Saturday. The good news is we are doing it all again on Friday, 16th October!
