This weeks training night was a trip to HMCG Scarborough. We work very closely together and it’s always great to visit them and spend time looking over the various kit and techniques they use . Teamwork is essential in any rescue and we are proud to always have these guys by our side.

Remember if you see someone in trouble in the sea or on the coast - dial 999 and ask for the coastguard 🛟

🚨 BREAKING: RUTH LEE GOES WALKABOUT 🚨

Whitby lifeboat can confirm that their well-travelled mannequin, Ruth Lee, has officially completed a solo coastal adventure… without so much as a passage plan.

Last seen minding her own business in Whitby, Ruth apparently decided she’d had enough of being rescued and fancied being the one doing the travelling for once. Fast forward 16 miles and she’s turned up in Scarborough looking like she’s been on a seaside mini-break—no doubt enjoying the sights, the sea air, and possibly a cheeky ice cream (99 with a flake, we’re told 🍦).

Scarborough lifeboat crew were quick to recover the wandering casualty and have confirmed she is safe, well, and showing no signs of wanting to return home just yet. In fact, she’s already moved on again…

📍 Latest update:

Earlier today Ruth has now been spotted at Filey Lifeboat then Flamborough Lifeboat Station lifeboat station.

Then early this afternoon Ruth was spotted at RNLI Bridlington Lifeboats

At this point, we’re less concerned about her welfare and more impressed with her logistics.

We suspect she’s currently ticking off a “bucket list”:
✔ Get rescued
✔ Tour the Yorkshire coast
⬜ Avoid being put back in the training store

She’s now reportedly begun the long journey home to Whitby… though knowing Ruth, don’t be surprised if she makes a few more “unscheduled stops” along the way.

Until then, we’ll just say this…
Some people wait all year for a seaside holiday.
Ruth just went and did it properly. 😎

🚨 Busy night at Scarborough Lifeboat Station 🚨

A full-on evening of training last night, highlighting just how vital joint working with other agencies is. We teamed up with North Yorkshire Fire Service to simulate a fire onboard the all-weather lifeboat, involving two casualties. Crews worked seamlessly together to extract and treat the injured — exactly the kind of teamwork that saves lives at sea.

👏 Huge congratulations to:
• Jess Marton on a successful Tier 1 pass-out on the inshore lifeboat
• Leanne and Sarah for passing their shore crew SLR assessments

A strong night all round — building skills, confidence, and teamwork.

At 01.20 on Wednesday morning our Shannon class lifeboat was launched for a Mayday call !
A yacht was in difficulty about 4 miles north of Scarborough and required urgent assistance.
A short search found the yacht and it was decided the best course of action was to transfer a crew member aboard the yacht and tow it back to Scarborough harbour .
The yacht and owner were handed over to HMCG personnel and our lifeboat made ready for its next service .
Another long night for the crew

The RNLI’s Lifeboat Station in Scarborough is looking for volunteers to join the existing team in the role of All-Weather Lifeboat and Inshore Lifeboat Crew.

The RNLI advises that you stay a safe distance from the water as conditions could knock you off your feet or wash you into the sea or water.

If you find yourself in trouble in the water, remember to Float to Live: lie back in the water with your head so far back that your ears are wet, extend your arms and legs and try to relax as best as you can until you get control of your breathing. If you see someone else in danger in the water, call 999 or 112 and ask for the Coastguard. If you have something that floats that they can hold on to, throw it to them. Don’t go in the water yourself – you could end up in difficulty too.

The RNLI's safety advice is:

Stay well back from stormy, rough seas, cliff edges and any exposed waterside location

Check the weather forecast and tide times before you go

Take a fully charged phone with you and let someone know where you are going and when you are due back

In an emergency, call 999 or 112 and ask for the Coastguard.
