This Sunday, 6 September, our Mayor, Cllr Lindsay Stirton, will be taking on his first-ever triathlon – the Brighton Triathlon!

The challenge includes a 1500m open-water swim, 50km bike ride and 10km run – an incredible achievement and one he’s been working hard towards.

The Mayor is taking on the challenge to raise funds and awareness for his chosen charity, Aspens, helping to provide inclusion, support and ordinary joy for children, young people and families in Seaford.

🏊‍♂️🚴‍♂️🏃‍♂️ 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗠𝗮𝘆𝗼𝗿 𝗶𝘀 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗛𝗶𝘀 𝗙𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁 𝗧𝗿𝗶𝗮𝘁𝗵𝗹𝗼𝗻!

The Mayor, Cllr Lindsay Stirton, has been keeping busy with his training as he prepares to take on a brand-new challenge – his first ever triathlon! 💪

On 6 September, the Mayor will be taking on the Brighton Triathlon, which involves:

🏊‍♂️ 1,500m open-water swim
🚴‍♂️ 50km bike ride
🏃‍♂️ 10km run

It’s certainly going to be a tough challenge, but that’s exactly the point! The Mayor is taking on a series of challenges throughout his Mayoral year to raise awareness and funds for his chosen charity, Aspens.

To prepare for the challenge, the Mayor has been putting in the miles and taking part in a number of events, including local running events as well as the Guernsey Open Castle Charity Swim, where he completed a 500m open-water swim from Castle Cornet. 🏊‍♂️🌊

We’ll be following his progress and cheering him on as the big day approaches. 🙌

On 6 September, 𝗜’𝗹𝗹 𝗯𝗲 𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗕𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝗼𝗻 𝗧𝗿𝗶𝗮𝘁𝗵𝗹𝗼𝗻: 𝗮 𝟭𝟱𝟬𝟬𝗺 𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗻-𝘄𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝘀𝘄𝗶𝗺, 𝗮 𝟱𝟬𝗸𝗺 𝗯𝗶𝗸𝗲 𝗿𝗶𝗱𝗲, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗮 𝟭𝟬𝗸𝗺 𝗿𝘂𝗻.

This will be my first triathlon. I expect it to be hard, but that is part of the point. Over the year I hope to take on several challenges in support of Aspens, and I’ll update everyone as each one comes along.

Yesterday I took part in the Guernsey Open Castle Charity Swim — a 500m open-water swim from Castle Cornet.

I entered mainly as preparation for the on 6 September, where the swim will be 1500m. I wanted more practice in open water, swimming with others, and building confidence.

It worked. The swim felt good, I settled well, and I came out feeling much more confident about Brighton.

I don’t yet have an official time — and I failed to set my watch correctly, so no watch time either. Results should be out in a few days.

The comic moment: I was happily sitting on the pier wall watching earlier waves go off when the announcement came for the pink wave to get ready. That was my wave. So I started about a minute late — not quite elite-athlete preparation, but very much in the spirit of the thing.

Next up: training for Brighton’s 1500m swim, 50km bike and 10km run.

It was a great pleasure to open Seaford’s first Community Music Festival.

Huge kudos to Seaford’s two Rotary clubs for working together to make this happen. Music matters so much to Seaford, and the combination of young musicians and established artists was genuinely inspiring.

It was also a pleasure to meet so many brilliant individuals and groups, including
Explorers Seaford Nursery and National Early Years Teacher of the Year Jo Herring, Seahaven FM, Bishopstone Table Tennis Club, Seaford Silver Band — and, of course, Twisty the Chicken.

A wonderful day of music, community and Seaford at its best.

I am pleased to confirm that my Mayor’s charity for the year will be Aspens Charities

Aspens supports autistic people and people with learning disabilities, together with their families, across the South East. I have chosen Aspens because I am an autistic man, and because I know how important it is that people are understood, respected and supported as themselves.

My mayoral year will therefore have a particular focus on inclusion, dignity and
community belonging. My ambition is not only to raise funds, important though that is. I also hope to use the year to raise awareness, start conversations, and encourage practical inclusion in civic and community life.
