While most of the North East were tucked up in bed, our pagers sounded at 04:36 this morning.

Tasked by Humber Coastguard, our volunteers launched our RNLI Shannon Class All Weather Lifeboat 13-36 to provide passage for North East Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust crews responding to a casualty requiring medical attention on Holy Island.

With relatively calm seas, our crew made best speed for Holy Island Harbour. Once the ambulance crew and their equipment had safely reached the casualty, our tasking was complete.

After communicating with HM Coastguard, we were stood down as a medical evacuation by sea was not required. The ambulance crew remained on the island and were later joined by additional resources once the tide had ebbed.

Our crew returned to station, where 13-36 was cleaned, refuelled and made ready for her next service.

🚑 Another great example of multi-agency working, with our lifeboat providing vital support to fellow emergency services when access to Holy Island is restricted by the tide.

And a special mention for trainee crew member Olivia, who completed her first shout on the All Weather Lifeboat this morning — an exciting milestone and a great achievement to tick off! 👏

⚡️ IT’S NOT JUST ABOUT BOATS AND WATER… 🛟

Ever wondered what happens when something electrical goes wrong on a lifeboat?

Our volunteer crew need to know. 🔧⚡️

This week, our colleague volunteer Chris headed down to RNLI HQ (RNLI College) in Poole for a 5-day DC Electrics Course, learning how to understand, test and fault-find the complex electrical systems that keep our lifeboats operating.

And it was anything but a simple week!

🔋 Reading complex wiring diagrams
⚡️ Understanding amps, volts, resistance and watts
🧮 Putting Ohm’s Law and Power Law into practice
🔩 Soldering and building a circuit tester
🔌 Working with series, parallel and complex circuits
🔎 Using electrical meter readings to diagnose faults
🛠️ Fault-finding on a simulated boat electrical system
📏 Calculating the correct wire and fuse sizes

The final assessment brought everything together — Chris had to build a circuit from a wiring diagram, work out the correct wire and fuse sizes using the calculations he had learned, and then prove that it all worked.

The course is designed to give our crew a deeper understanding of the electrical systems onboard, and the skills to identify and diagnose faults when they occur.

Because when you’re responding to an emergency, knowing how something works — and what to do when it doesn’t — really matters.

A fantastic five days of learning, problem-solving and getting stuck into the technical side of lifeboat operations.

On Saturday 15th August at 8.49pm, our pagers sounded and our volunteer crew launched on service aboard our Shannon Class All-Weather Lifeboat 13-36.

Humber Coastguard had received a *PAN-PAN* message via VHF Channel 16 from a solo sailor aboard a 10-metre yacht, approximately 13 nautical miles offshore, after the vessel became entangled in fishing gear.

With a crew of six on board, the lifeboat launched and made best speed to the casualty vessel, arriving on scene around 25 minutes later. RNLI Coxswain Graeme Trotter assessed the situation and transferred a crew member onto the yacht to check the welfare of the sailor and determine the safest course of action.

Our crew were able to free the yacht from the entanglement while also saving the fishing equipment, leaving it in place for its owner.

Unfortunately, some of the line had become wrapped around the yacht’s propeller, leaving the vessel without propulsion and adrift. Following a detailed risk assessment, a tow was established and the slow passage back to the safe haven of Seahouses Harbour began, arriving shortly after 2.30am.

The yacht was safely moored in the harbour to allow repairs to be arranged. The sailor was in good spirits and extremely grateful for the assistance provided. Due to the state of the tide, our lifeboat remained afloat overnight and was recovered later the following morning.

Volunteer Crew Navigator Andrew said:

"This was a great example of our crew’s training being put into practice. We regularly exercise towing procedures, as they are a key part of our role. Incidents like this are a reminder that even very experienced sailors can get into difficulty, and highlight the importance of carrying the right safety equipment, including a lifejacket, VHF radio and suitable navigation equipment."

A reminder to all water users: always carry reliable means of communication, wear appropriate safety equipment and plan ahead before heading to sea.

While the world paused on Wednesday to witness the solar eclipse, our volunteers were out on exercise aboard our Shannon Class All Weather Lifeboat 13-36.

They did also get a chance to observe this phenomenon with their 'trendy' eclipse glasses courtesy of RNLI Crew Volunteer David.

💙 A HUGE THANK YOU TO
NORTHUMBERLAND IFCA 💙

A very special thank you to Northumberland Inshore Fisheries and Conservation Authority (Northumberland IFCA) for their incredibly generous £1,050 donation to RNLI Seahouses Lifeboat Station.

The cheque was presented to our crew on Saturday 8th August at RNLI - Amble Lifeboat Station Fete Day, while our lifeboats were afloat — making for some fantastic photos and a rather special setting to receive such a generous donation! 🚤🌊

The money was raised through the sale of seized illegal fishing equipment, with the proceeds being distributed between several RNLI lifeboat stations and the Fishermen's Mission. A whopping total of £14,700 was donated across the charitable organisations.

We’re hugely grateful to Northumberland IFCA for turning the proceeds of enforcement activity into vital support for those working to keep our coastline safe.

Every donation makes a difference, helping us to maintain our boats, equipment and training so that our volunteer crews can continue to be ready to Save Lives at Sea.

Yesterday at 1.52pm, our pagers sounded and our RNLI volunteers were tasked to launch D-Class Inshore Lifeboat D-828 following reports of four people cut off by the tide at the south end of Budle Bay.

Our crew quickly assembled at the station and, within minutes, D-828 was launched and making best speed towards the last reported location.

Several assets from our partner agencies were also mobilised to assist at the scene, including Seahouses Coastguard Rescue Team Berwick Coastguard rescue team and Howick Coastguard Rescue Team

Thankfully, as our crew arrived in the area, we received the welcome news that all four casualties had managed to safely make their own way back to shore.

With no further assistance required, our crew were stood down and returned to Seahouses Harbour, where D-828 was cleaned, refuelled and made ready for her next call.

🌊 A little reminder RNLI Seahouses as we head into the busiest part of summer: our coastline is incredible, but the tide waits for no one.

If you're heading out exploring, check the tide times, allow plenty of time to get back to shore and always carry a means of communication — ideally protected in a waterproof case.

🌊 Saving Lives At Sea is BACK 🌊

We’re so excited to announce that Series 11 of Saving Lives at Sea starts Tuesday 18th August at 8pm on a
BBC Two & iPlayer 🚨

The first episode features our neighbours from up the coast at RNLI North Berwick Lifeboat. Viewers will get a crew's eye view of the rescue of a capsized kayaker last July, along with rescues from Porthcawl RNLI Lifeboat, RNLI Dungeness Lifeboat Station and Scarborough Lifeboat Station.

Series 11 of the fantastically popular documentary series has 10 action packed episodes following lifesaving volunteers as they tackle challenging rescue missions around the UK and Ireland - celebrating a decade on our screens!!

Later in the series there may also be a feature from RNLI Seahouses Lifeboat Station Crew

A big thank you to Friends of Beadnell Sailing Club & Harbour for hosting such a brilliant event — and, of course, to all our amazing supporters who braved the rather miserable weather to come along and show their support! ☔️🌊

A massive thank you to all our incredible RNLI volunteers from Fundraising, Water Safety, Shore Crew, Afloat Crew and our wonderful Shop Volunteers who helped make the day such a success. 🚤

Despite the rain, over 150 people stepped aboard our Shannon Class Lifeboat 13-36 throughout the day for a guided tour of our All Weather Lifeboat. 🚤👋

And, thanks to your incredible generosity, we also raised a substantial amount towards our lifesaving work — helping us continue our mission of Saving Lives At Sea. 🧡💙
