Seaton Delaval Hall is a great English Baroque villa designed by Sir John Vanbrugh for Admiral George Delaval, built between 1719 and 1732, with formal gardens and colourful borders. Please note: This walk takes in farmland where livestock graze. Therefore, unfortunately we are unable to accommodate dogs, including access dogs. Tickets are for wider estate walk only and do not include admission into Seaton Delaval Hall. Admission to the hall not required.

As May half term draws to a close we’re now back into the last half term before Summer of Play, which means the hall is open Wednesday to Sunday and closed Mondays and Tuesdays.

There’s so much to see:

🏵 The gardens are looking beautiful right now. You’ll need to be quick to catch the laburnum arch, though. It probably has just another week left this year!

🖼 Enjoy exhibitions and installations including the British Council’s 𝗘𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗵 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗮𝘀𝘀, taken from GBR – Geology of Britannic Repair, from the British Pavilion of the Venice Architecture Biennale 2025, see this year’s finalists and shortlisted artists in the 𝗡𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗵 𝗘𝗮𝘀𝘁 𝗘𝗺𝗲𝗿𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗔𝗿𝘁𝗶𝘀𝘁 𝗔𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱 and 𝗩𝗮𝗻𝗯𝗿𝘂𝗴𝗵 𝟯𝟬𝟬, a fascinating look into the life and careers of Sir John Vanbrugh, presented by The Georgian Group with support from the National Lottery Heritage Fund.

We’re on the lookout for people to join our volunteering team, specifically working with children and young people. We’re looking for friendly, enthusiastic volunteers who want to inspire the next generation on the beauty and history of Seaton Delaval Hall and the surrounding area. You might be helping to:

Welcome families and school groups
Support playful events like Summer of Play and Tot’s Plots
Get involved in creative activities and hands-on fun

Inductions will take place on Friday 5th June and we’re particularly keen to hear from people available on Wednesdays and Thursdays to support with school groups and Fridays to help deliver Tots’ Plots.

Dare we say it but there’s been a big yellow ball spotted in the sky over Seaton Delaval Hall this week and it’s perfect timing as we head into half term!

The hall is now open every day up to and including Sunday 31 May for holiday adventures. Here’s what’s on offer, with everything included with your membership or standard admission and no booking required:

⚽️ The 𝗗𝗲𝗹𝗮𝘃𝗮𝗹 𝗚𝗮𝗺𝗲𝘀 𝗖𝗵𝗲𝘀𝘁 is back! Help yourself to a game and enjoy a runaround together on the South Lawn. Choose from ball games, racket sports, frisbees and more.

🦇 See artist Amy Dover's 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝗲𝗰𝗿𝗲𝘁 𝗕𝗮𝘁𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗦𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗼𝗻 𝗗𝗲𝗹𝗮𝘃𝗮𝗹 𝗛𝗮𝗹𝗹 installation across the gardens and meet stunning drawings close up of the creatures who call the hall home.

🌸 Pick up a 𝗕𝗹𝗼𝘀𝘀𝗼𝗺 map and explore the gardens. The laburnum arch is out and at its peak so come and take a wander beneath its beautiful yellow petals, enjoy the sweet smell of the azaleas and the bright blooms of the rhododendrons.

🎨 See finalists’ artworks from the 𝗡𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗵 𝗘𝗮𝘀𝘁 𝗘𝗺𝗲𝗿𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗔𝗿𝘁𝗶𝘀𝘁 𝗔𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱: glassmaker Joanna Manousis’s Dust & Diamonds can be found in the Basement and Wilfred Sears’s The Seaton Stones across the site. Visit the Stables to see the proposals from this year’s eight shortlisted artists, play curator for the day and vote for your favourite. Plus all week see Wilfred carve his final piece in live demonstrations from Monday to Friday.

🌎Step into the Entrance Hall to see 𝗘𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗵 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗮𝘀𝘀, taken from the British Council’s British Pavilion at the 2025 Venice Architecture Biennale, GBR – Geology of Britannic Repair.

Opening tomorrow at Seaton Delaval Hall, discover this year’s final works from the 𝗡𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗵 𝗘𝗮𝘀𝘁 𝗘𝗺𝗲𝗿𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗔𝗿𝘁𝗶𝘀𝘁 𝗔𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱 exhibition – a vibrant showcase of bold ideas from the region’s most exciting up-and-coming creatives.

This year’s finalists are Joanna Manousis, whose 𝗗𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗗𝗶𝗮𝗺𝗼𝗻𝗱𝘀 inspired by the hall’s industrial past, can be found in the Beer Cellar and stonemason, Wilfred Sears, whose 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗼𝗻 𝗦𝘁𝗼𝗻𝗲𝘀 carved creations reflect the breadth of flora and fauna on the estate.

You can also visit the showcase of the eight shortlisted artists’ proposals and vote for your favourite to see them realised as final pieces in 2027.

Launching tomorrow, Saturday, 9 May, step into a celebration of colour, creativity and nature at Seaton Delaval Hall with the Festival of Blossom.

What to expect:
𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝗲𝗰𝗿𝗲𝘁 𝗕𝗮𝘁𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗦𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗼𝗻 𝗗𝗲𝗹𝗮𝘃𝗮𝗹 𝗛𝗮𝗹𝗹 by artist Amy Dover – a fascinating site-wide installation revealing the hidden connections between blossom, wildlife and healthy ecosystems. Plus, take part in a gentle interactive experience with Amy’s erasure display, encouraging you to carefully rub away parts of the drawings, revealing how environmental change can impact protected species.

A 𝗯𝗹𝗼𝘀𝘀𝗼𝗺 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗹 through the gardens, from the golden laburnum arch to vibrant rhododendrons and azaleas.

Earth Compass points to Seaton Delaval Hall until 12 July!

Taken from the British Council’s award winning British Pavilion exhibition of the Venice Architecture Biennale 2025, GBR – Geology of Britannic Repair, Earth Compass at Seaton Delaval Hall is a selection of works from the sculptural installation that asks us to rethink our relationship with the ground beneath our feet.

The exhibition was curated by a UK-Kenya team comprising Owen Hopkins, Director of the Farrell Centre at Newcastle University, Kabage Karanja and Stella Mutegi of Nairobi-based Cave_bureau and Professor Kathryn Yusoff of Queen Mary University of London.

The three featured works are:

𝗘𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗵 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗮𝘀𝘀: A sculptural and spatial installation in the Central Hall, re centring architecture’s relationship to geology.

𝗗𝗼𝘂𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗩𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻: In the Saloon. A reworking of the striking beaded veil installation that was draped over the British Pavilion making visible the “other earths” that colonisation displaced.

Elements from 𝗥𝗶𝗳𝘁 𝗥𝗼𝗼𝗺: Models, drawings and maps emanating from the Great Rift Valley as a conceptual and geological axis for rethinking architecture and repair in the Saloon.

Set against the dramatic backdrop of the hall, Earth Compass encourages reflection on architecture, geology, empire and repair.
