Just 10 minutes from junction 37 off the M6 you will find Sedbergh. The Sleepy Elephants (what Alfred Wainwright called the Howgills) create a great backdrop to our small market town which is nestled at the foot of these majestic beasts. Although in Cumbria, Sedbergh is actually the largest populated area of the Yorkshire Dales National Park. It is a traditional ‘market town’ built on tradition an
d a close community spirit. The Market Charter was granted to the town way back in 1251 by Henry III and these markets are still held every Wednesday. The bustling Main Street has all sorts of little gems just waiting to be discovered. Tea or Coffee, sweet or savoury there's plenty of choice when it comes to refreshments. From a gentle stroll along the River Rawthey to a more energetic hike to the top of Winder and beyond. Get lost in the peaceful Fells of the Howgills – Arrant Haw, The Calf, Cautley Spout, Crook – they are all waiting to be explored. Maybe Mountain Biking is more your ‘thing’ and has indeed seen a great upsurge in popularity in recent years – why go to the Lake District where you have to share your ‘ride’ with many, many others – instead get lost in the ups and downs of the Howgills with its many valleys and ravines. The town has not forgotten its past, once a thriving Wool Town with woollen mills and the 'Terrible Knitters of Dent' just up the road. Farfield Mill is a great place to retrace this history. It is home to local artists, exhibitions, retail gallery spaces, a heritage exhibition and Weavers Café. The many sheep farmers still in the area are also a testament to these bygone days. Sedbergh is extremely proud of its public school which dates back to the 16th century and has a highly acclaimed sporting and music heritage. Many boys and girls are now honoured to be known as “Old Sedberghians”. Sedbergh is England’s Book Town so what better place to find that classic book you always wanted to read.
