This morning we received a call from Network Rail concerning an injured swan beside the tracks at Calverley Bridge.

The bird had been struck by a passing train, sustaining injuries to a wing. Our rescuer was able to attend the scene and secure the animal to safety. Our gratitude to the Network Rail staff for both contacting us and staying with the swan until help arrived.

Our thanks to those who reported that a swan and a cygnet were found caught in the same stretch of fishing line with a float attached, earlier today at Nunroyd. The fishing tackle was safely removed by our rescuer, and the birds immediately returned to the water without injury.

Earlier this week, we were called to Pontefract Park after reports of a distressed cygnet found to be trapped by one leg in fishing line, near one of the lake’s islands.

Dan and Phil attended and launched our smaller rescue dinghy so the bird could be safely reached. After carefully cutting away the huge lengths of line caught around branches and vegetation, the cygnet was freed and successfully brought ashore, with the animal taken for further treatment and care.

Our thanks to Hayden for both spotting the cygnet and contacting us to assist.

The first cygnets of 2026 recently arrived in our care alongside their mother, who required treatment.

Sadly, the male swan had died before the cygnets hatched, leaving the family vulnerable to aggression from another nesting pair on the same lake.

We are delighted to report that both the mother and her cygnets have made excellent progress during their time in our care and are doing very well.

Our thanks to the local residents who alerted us to their situation, and to the local Police wildlife crime officers for their invaluable support in the rescue of this family.

Perseverance paid off following a recent trip across the Nottinghamshire border to the Chesterfield Canal.

On Thursday evening, a swan family became separated when four cygnets were swept through a lock spillway and stranded and vulnerable on a stretch of canal below, leaving their parents with just one cygnet.

Having located the distressed youngsters, our rescuer remained on site until midnight, making every effort to reunite the family but unfortunately without success. Returning early the following morning, the missing cygnets were quickly located again and, despite the challenging conditions, they were this time safely rescued with the kind assistance of a passing boat.

After being dried off and given time to recover, their parents were located again, allowing the cygnets to be returned to them. The result was a truly heartwarming family reunion!

Our thanks to all concerned, including the kind help of local resident Chris, and the owners of the passing boat, too!

We attended a swan on the Ashton Canal in Manchester, after reports that she was carrying fishing tackle. The bird - one of a breeding pair with newly hatched cygnets - had reportedly been observed for a number days with a fishing hook embedded through her beak.

Despite determined efforts by other organisations to help, previous rescue attempts had unfortunately been unsuccessful and the situation sounded as though it was becoming increasingly urgent, so we were happy to try and provide assistance.

Thankfully, our rescuer was able to secure the swan on first attempt and managed to safely remove the fishing tackle. Fortunately, the bird had suffered no lasting injury, and was promptly reunited with her mate and cygnets.

Our sincere thanks to all concerned.
