Bank Holiday Monday (what’s one of those?!) and today our rescuers have attended to reports of injured animals in Leeds, Keighley, Wakefield, York, Doncaster and most recently to this swan at East Park in Hull.

We were contacted by park rangers following reports from concerned members of the public of a distressed swan entangled around its wings and legs in fishing line. Our thanks to the rangers for use of the park’s boat and their kind assistance.

We recently attended to this breeding male swan, reported carrying fishing line with some weights attached.

A small hook was also located in the bird’s tongue, which was safely removed by our rescuer before the bird was returned back to his waiting family.

We attended to this young swan last weekend over the border into Nottinghamshire. The bird was found trailing line, with a tight piece caught beneath the lower beak - known as ‘chinstrap’.

Thankfully, we were able to safely remove the tackle, and the bird was reunited with the rest of the family a short time later.

We attended the disused Elsecar Canal at Brampton earlier this week, following reports of a young swan that had become entangled in fishing line and was unable to free itself.

Using one of our rescue boats, we were able to safely reach the cygnet, remove the fishing line and bring him to safety.

Thankfully, he had suffered no lasting injuries and, after being checked over, was released a short time later and happily reunited with his family.

Just two of the 12 swans alone that we were contacted to help yesterday!

These two youngsters came to us via Yorkshire Dales Wildlife Rescue and in need of further rehabilitation. Today, they’ve enjoyed being introduced to some of our other recovering cygnets in one of our outdoor pens.

Yesterday evening, we worked into the fading light to assist a young swan reported in distress on the River Rother in Sheffield. The bird had become entangled by its feet and wings in fishing line near the top of a weir.

The only safe means of access was by use of our boat. Our team secured the bird, carefully cut her free from the line, and removed the remaining fishing line from the surrounding vegetation before bringing the cygnet safely ashore.

The young swan is now recovering in our care and receiving continued attention for a wing injury.

The number of Woodpigeons in need of care is seemingly endless for rescues. Sadly, these birds are often unfairly disliked, despite being fascinating, sentient creatures and every bit as deserving of compassion and care.

Many arrive with injuries, including wounds caused by cat bites, collisions with vehicles and other obstacles. Here are just a few we’ve helped recently.
