Barlby Community Library

Barlby Community Library A friendly space to visit and enjoy. Library volunteers are drawn from a wide cross section of the community.

In June 2012 Barlby and Osgodby Parish Council took over the management of the library building at Barlby, with the aim of safeguarding library services, providing a part time Parish office and developing a community hub for local events and exhibitions. Day to day library services are provided through volunteers, with support from North Yorkshire County Council who have overall responsibility for

the provision of library stock and equipment. The library was one of the first community libraries in North Yorkshire and continues to thrive with the support of the local council. There are currently 19 library volunteers who undertake a range of duties in connection with the library, particularly the role of library assistant to help customers use library facilities, and other tasks such as helping with children’s activities, hosting exhibitions and meetings, and supporting special events. They are independent of the County Council and the Town Council and have their own constitution and management team. Without our fabulous volunteers, the library cannot run. We are always looking for more people to join us, you can pick up shifts as little as once a month to every week. If you are interested in becoming a volunteer, please call into the library to pick up an application pack. Regular events held at the library include Children’s story time every Friday from 2:15pm and regular children's craft events held on Saturdays and during school holidays. Check out our coffee morning with quiz, currently held on the 2nd Wednesday of every month from 11am - 12:30pm. We also have a regular Book Club that meets on the 1st Tuesday of every month from 6:30pm. We have a range of DVD's, CDs and Audio Books, Large Print, Fiction, Non-Fiction, Biographies, Travel Books, History and Information, plus an extensive Children's section. There are four computers with Internet access and assistance, if required, to research Family History and homework and Wi-Fi is available! We have facilities for printing in black & white and colour, sizes A4 to A3, a scanner and we are the only library to offer a laminating service!! We are currently upgrading our library space, this is all with the help and support of the Town Council, a CEF grant awarded and fund raising from the Barlby Library Volunteers.

πŸ“š Librarians on Their Travels! πŸ“š

Our lovely team member Sandra has just come back from a trip to Shetland β€” and, of course, she couldn’t resist visiting a library while she was there! 😊 and what makes it even better? Sandra was reading Wild Fire by Ann Cleeves while on her trip β€” one of the Shetland mysteries featuring DI Jimmy Perez. πŸ“–πŸ”Ž

She popped into Shetland Library in Lerwick, so we thought we’d share a little library love from a bit further north! β€οΈπŸ“š We love seeing our library family discovering libraries wherever their travels take them.

Have you ever visited a library while on holiday? We’d love to hear about it! πŸŒπŸ“š

πŸ“šβœοΈ Happy 1st of September! βœοΈπŸ“š

β€œGo, confront the problem. Fight! Win!”
– Edna Mode

New month, new beginnings… so why not make September the month you finally start writing that book you’ve always dreamed about? πŸ“– πŸ’ It’s never too late to pick up a pen, open a laptop and start telling your story! πŸ“

And remember, darling… NO CAPES! πŸ˜‰πŸ–€

πŸŒΉπŸ’™ Remembering Diana πŸ’™πŸŒΉ

Today marks 29 years since we lost Diana, Princess of Wales.

She remains remembered around the world for her warmth, compassion and the way she connected with people from all walks of life. Almost three decades later, her memory continues to live on. 🌹 Remembered with affection, today and always. πŸ’™

From everyone at Barlby Library & Community Hub. πŸ“š

Barlby’s Twin Library – A Fond Memory

Constructed in 1973, the former library in Hunmanby was specially designed and built by East Riding County Council, thanks in no small part to the dedicated efforts of the late County Councillor Miss Owston, who also played an important role in establishing Barlby Library.

The bright, spacious library quickly became a welcoming place for the whole community, attracting visitors of all ages and providing a much-loved space for reading, learning and meeting others. Sadly, following budget cuts by North Yorkshire County Council, the library closed its doors in 2012.

Although the library is no longer there, its memory remains β€” and for us at Barlby, it is a special reminder of our shared history and the connection between two libraries that owe so much to the same dedicated woman.

A fond memory of Barlby’s twin library, and an important part of our Yorkshire story. πŸ“šπŸ’›

πŸ“šπŸ’› A Little Reading Inspiration πŸ’›πŸ“š

"A reader lives a thousand lives before he dies. The man who never reads lives only one."
β€” George R. R. Martin

There really is something magical about picking up a book and being transported into another world, another time, or another person's story. βœ¨πŸ“– So, what adventure are you reading your way into today?

Happy reading from everyone at Barlby Library! πŸ’›πŸ“š

πŸ“š Last night I dreamt I went to Thornfield Hall... πŸ“š

One of our volunteers noticed something brilliant that Jane Eyre and Rebecca’s Mrs de Winter have so much in common! Two quiet, clever heroines who find their way in big, mysterious houses… πŸ’›

And here’s the fun fact β€” both were played by the wonderful Joan Fontaine! 🎬 We love both books β€” what do you think? Do you see the similarities? Which heroine is your favourite? Let us know! πŸ“–

Our community jigsaw is really starting to take shape, and the border is almost finished! πŸŽ‰A big thank you to everyone who has stopped by and added a few pieces. Every little bit helps! 🧩😊 We can't wait to see the finished picture, so keep an eye out for our updates as it continues to grow.

Happy puzzling from Barlby Library! πŸ“šπŸ’›

πŸŒΉπŸ“š Remembering Dolly Parton πŸ“šπŸŒΉ

Today we say goodbye to the wonderful Dolly Parton, who has died at the age of 80. πŸ’›

Dolly wasn’t just a country music legend β€” she was also a great champion of books, reading and children’s literacy. Through her Imagination Library, millions of children around the world have received books and been encouraged to discover the joy of reading. πŸ“šβœ¨ οΏΌ

A fitting quote from Dolly: β€œIf I’m remembered 100 years from now, I hope it will be not for looks but for books.” πŸ“–πŸ’›

From all of us at Barlby Library & Community Hub, thank you, Dolly, for helping put books into the hands of so many children.

Rest peacefully, Dolly. πŸŒΉπŸ“š

β˜€οΈπŸ“š Our Sister Library in Selby! πŸ“šβ˜€οΈ

We popped into our sister library in Selby, and their display looked so beautiful we just had to take a picture! πŸ“ΈπŸ’› It's bright, colourful and full of summer sunshine, with lots of lovely summer reads to choose from. πŸŒ»πŸ“–β˜€οΈ

A big well done to the team in Selby for creating such a wonderful display! It certainly made us feel like summer is still hereβ€” even if the Yorkshire weather has other ideas! πŸ˜‚πŸŒ¦οΈ

Which summer book would you pick? πŸ“šβ˜€οΈ
