Today we had some little people visit Greig's cabin. It is lovely to see them come in and kick their shoes off. They played, they made some toilet roll bird feeders and they coloured some birds to add to the ones other kids made. They will be varnished and put on the outside of the building. 😁 Just little friends having fun.
If anyone is shopping and wouldn't mind buying a wee bag of bird seed or fat balls i am starting to collect now for winter as our stock is almost depleted. Little bags are easier for me to transport. Or if you would like to make a donation, i can message you the bank details ❤️❤️

Do you make use of areas of nature or green space in Selkirk and the Valleys?

Are you interested in more connectivity between climate action, spaces for nature, spaces for people and improved biodiversity?

Join us at the Haining on July 1st to talk about a growing network for nature in Selkirk and the Valleys, and hear how you can get involved this Summer through a series of practical, hands-on climate and nature activity at Selkirk Hill and the Deer Park.

Bright Green Nature and Selkirk Hill Group will share work that is ongoing across their two sites - before Southern Upland Partnership's Scottish Borders Climate Action Network facilitate a conversation, over tea and cake, about the opportunities, challenges and potential for growing this nature network across Selkirk and the Valleys. This will be followed by the first of our climate & water walks at the Deer Park (including a chance to meet the Exmoor ponies!) between 3-4.30pm.

Please note: The climate & water walk will take place on uneven ground at Deer Park and involves the crossing of a fence, it is therefore not suitable for wheelchair users or those with mobility access needs.

A mention for Selkirk High School 😁

We are delighted to have been able to support 16 brilliant projects through this year’s Youth Climate Action Fund. From electric cars to composting, the range of projects shows the breadth of climate action in the Scottish Borders. We are pleased to be able build upon relationships with existing partners who are previous successful applicants to the fund; however, it is also heartening to see that we continue to reach new groups and we are able to extend funding to four groups that we haven’t funded before. Funded activities will take place throughout the remainder of 2026, so keep an eye out for the exciting projects detailed below.

Southern Uplands Partnership has always championed embedding creative approaches within community-led work, creating awareness around issues relating to climate change and the environment. Thus, we are delighted to be able to fund the following organisations whose projects all use creativity as a means to address and engage the young people of the Scottish Borders: The Great Tapestry of Scotland, Woven Kinship CIC, Interest Link, Transform Arts, River Tweed Salmon Fishing Museum, and Borders Youth Theatre.

A number of projects had a strong ecological theme or focussed upon growing and gardening, these organisations included: Bavs (Berwickshire) Ltd, Stow Disprupters, Broughton Primary School’s Parent Council, Jedburgh Grammar, Selkirk High School, Eat Sleep Ride, and Heron & Willow Book Shop.

The remaining three organisations are Borders College, who will use the funding to help students with the research and development of an electric vehicle; Let’s Eat Better CIC who will run sustainable cookery courses, and Sustainable Borders who used the funding to help run an active travel event in Selkirk focussed upon cycling.

We’ll bring updates on each of the projects as they progress.

Great idea for kids who love ponies ❤️

Recently i took away the bird spotting book. I have replaced it with a new one. As we are feeding less, you might not see as many, but still let the kids draw what they do see 😁

31 different species of birds have been spotted including, bullfinches which have a vibrant orange colour, and tree creepers which are fun to watch. The feeders were most visited by Mr Robin and his gang at 91 spottings, and Mr Chaffinch beating him with 122!.

Some unusual sightings too which really puts Mauldsheugh on the map for visitors . .. 1 Millenium Falcon, 1 Godzilla, a giant panda and Lord Lucan 😂

Last week we were busy starting to tidy up a bit. I have put a new book at the bird hide, feel free to add the date and birds you see. We have been feeding less due to recommendations, putting fat balls out, and disinfecting the feeders as often as we can to help prevent disease.

Despite the horrible weather on Friday i had some children who braved it to come to an activity i was asked to run for Sustainable Borders. We decorated wooden birds, which will be part of an ongoing activity. We will fix them to the back of Greig's cabin once they are varnished for visitors to see.

We also decorated and made some small bird feeders with fat and seeds for little birds around the cabin.

I have put up a new noticeboard on the side of the building which will give you information of any clubs activities or woodland activities that will be run.

I have also said to one parent i will have a small group of kids down who just like to get outside, do some weeding, fix up Mousetropolis and jobs for little people, with a bit of exploring thrown in.

Thanks to everyone who visits and tells me how much they love Mauldsheugh.

This afternoon at 2.30pm we will be doing some nature crafts for under 10's, even if it is raining 😁. It will be held in Greig's Hub. Starting point is at the Swimming Pool where you will get your instructions. 😁

Here are the photos of all the young people from Borders College braving the rain and mud to do projects for us at Mauldsheugh. We are very grateful to them and proud of their achievements this year.

On Friday i discovered the Anthill Mob. No not the ones from Wacky Races, the real live version. It was fascinating to watch them busy at work. Each having their own job to do.
