Waste bin on Palace Field
The waste bin by the bench on Palace field, provided by the Otford Society, has proved so popular that it has been difficult to keep up with emptying it. To meet this demand, the Society has now provided a second bin! So, thanks to the Otford Society and to you for keeping Palace Field tidy.

OItford Palace
The post holding the gate to Palace field by the Bubblestone Parade has rotted and broken. The gate is being held in the open position by a rope. Please take care in this area and do not interfere with the rope! It will take some while to repair because we have to apply for Scheduled Monument Consent to dig the hole for the replacement. We will be applying for that this afternoon.

Otford Palace Tours
The series of tours of the Palace in May were sold out and so, if you were unable to visit us then, now is your chance to see inside the build and learned about the history behind it.
The Trust will be running three sessions, starting in the North West Tower, at 10:00h, 12:00h and 14.00h. The price for adults (children under 15 are free) is £6 and you can book at:

Visit to The National Archives
Our research into the history of Otford Palace led me to the National Archives in Kew, to inspect papers relating to repairs at Easthampstead and OTFORD, and a Survey of the Mansion House of the Honour of Otford (1548). At first sight, the documents were disappointing: there was little detail in either and the Tudor text is difficult to read. However, the wonders of technology may be able to help with interpreting the text. A fascinating place to visit with very helpful staff.

Saturday 15th August was a busy day. In addition to the Sevenoaks Art Club the Palace hosted the Otford Protection Committee 'Toast to the Green Belt' Full details on The Otford Village Hub.

Painting the Palace
Members of the Sevenoaks Art Club sought shade on Palace Field as they sketched and painted Otford Palace. We look forward to seeing the finished art works.

Seniors Action Forum at Otford Palace
Sevenoaks District Seniors Action Forum (SDSAF: https://www.sdsaf.org.uk/) held their annual afternoon tea at Otford Palace on Wednesday 5th August. The weather was kind (not too hot that afternoon) and a good time was had by all. We look forward to hosting the Forum again next summer.

Fruit in the Heritage Orchard
After the blossom comes the fruit.
While it will be two or three years before the heritage trees at Otford Palace produce much fruit, some of the trees already bear fruit. HOWEVER, please don't be tempted to pick them before they are ripe. They won't taste too good and may give you the collywobbles!

Palace Field Otford mosaic of habitats
Visitors to Palace Field will have noticed that the site now has grass growing to different lengths in different areas which is known by the term "a mosaic of habitats". With the forthcoming work on the environmental area, we are creating a patchwork of different environmental zones—such as meadows, wetlands, bare ground, and scrub—interconnected within a single landscape. These diverse microhabitats support significantly higher biodiversity than a single uniform environment, providing essential nesting, foraging, and sheltering opportunities for a wide variety of wildlife.
