The Walled Gardens at Croome Court: A Labour of Love by Chris & Karen Cronin

In 2000, Chris and Karen Cronin embarked on an extraordinary journey to restore one of Europe's largest Georgian walled gardens, nestled within the Croome Court estate. Dating back to the 16th century and once a part of the Coventry family estate, these magnificent gardens had fallen into a state of ruin—overgrown, aband

oned, and long forgotten. Despite warnings about the immense challenge ahead, Chris and Karen saw potential where others saw decay. Driven by passion and vision, they set out to revive the gardens and uncover the history hidden beneath the overgrowth. For over two decades, they dedicated themselves to meticulous restoration, preserving original features while breathing new life into the space. Today, The Walled Gardens have been beautifully restored and are open to the public on Saturday and Sunday from April to September, along with Bank Holidays, showcasing their natural beauty and rich history. The ongoing evolution of the gardens continues to reveal new treasures and stories, making every visit a unique experience. The Cronins' hard work, perseverance, and love for this special place ensure that its magic will be enjoyed for generations to come. Entry through National Trust Visitor Centre, High Green, Worcester, Worcestershire, WR8 9DW. Admission is £7 per adult, and children under 14 enjoy free entry (regular National Trust admission applies), with all funds contributing to the continuous restoration and maintenance of the historic gardens.

🍎🍐 Apples and pears!

Our fruit trees are looking particularly healthy at the moment following Chris’s recent pruning, and there’s quite a bounty developing across The Walled Gardens.

With more than 100 heritage apple varieties growing here, the fruit trees are always an important part of the gardens, and it’s wonderful to see them producing so well this season despite the long spell of hot, dry weather.

As the fruit ripens, we’ll be picking as much as we can to sell at the garden gate during our usual opening hours.

As ever, what’s available will depend entirely on what’s ready to pick – and once it’s gone, it’s gone! So if you spot some during your visit, be quick. 🍏

There’s something rather special about taking home fruit that’s been grown and freshly picked right here in the gardens.

The courgettes are certainly making up for lost time! 🌱

As we mentioned earlier in the season, we haven’t had the usual glut of courgettes this year following the long spell of hot, dry weather.

But the plants are looking wonderfully healthy now and, while there may not be quite as many to harvest, a few of them are making up for it in size!

Some have grown into rather impressive specimens, and it’s lovely to see the plants continuing to produce despite the challenging conditions they’ve faced this summer.

Just another example of how no two growing seasons at The Walled Gardens are ever quite the same. 💚

🌿 We’re open this Bank Holiday Monday (tomorrow)!

If you’re looking for somewhere to explore over the Bank Holiday, The Walled Gardens at Croome Court will be open on Monday from 11am–5pm, with last entry at 4pm.

There’s plenty to discover across our seven acres, from the historic walls, glasshouses and garden buildings to the orchards, seasonal produce and areas that have been brought back to life through more than two decades of restoration.

It’s a lovely opportunity to slow down, have a wander and see what’s growing at this time of year – and with the gardens changing constantly through the season, there’s always something different to spot.

🌿 Fresh from The Walled Gardens this Bank Holiday

Whether you’re coming to explore the gardens or simply passing by, we’ll have any freshly picked produce available to buy outside the garden gate from 11am.

What’s available will depend entirely on what’s ready to harvest that morning, so quantities will be limited and, as always, once it’s gone, it’s gone! We recommend coming early if you don’t want to miss out.

And don’t forget, with it being the Bank Holiday we’re open for an extra day on Monday, giving you another opportunity to come and explore the gardens while you’re here.

Late summer is a lovely time to see what’s growing and changing around the gardens, from the produce in the Mosaic Garden and our thriving tomatoes to the sunflowers, pumpkins and tropical plants enjoying the warmth in The Fig House.

🍎 Chris has been learning a new skill in the gardens!

If you’ve visited The Walled Gardens, you’ll probably have noticed the beautiful espalier fruit trees lining many of the paths. Keeping them looking their best takes a little more than simply reaching for the secateurs, so Chris recently had a lesson in how to prune them properly.

A big thank you to Katherine Alker, Garden & Outdoors Manager at NT Croome, who kindly came over to spend some time with Chris and guide him through the process.

We thought we’d share a few before and after photos so you can see the results for yourself.

We always love hearing from visitors who enjoy The Walled Gardens, but there’s something particularly special about hearing that you’re already planning your next visit! 🌿

The gardens are constantly changing throughout the season, so even if you’ve visited before, there’s usually something new to see – whether it’s produce beginning to ripen, flowers coming into bloom or simply a corner of the gardens you didn’t discover last time.

🌿 There’s one area of the gardens that has definitely enjoyed all this hot weather – The Fig House!

While the prolonged heat and dry conditions have proved challenging elsewhere in The Walled Gardens this summer, the more tropical plants inside this glasshouse have been very much in their element.

Our fig tree, banana and citrus plants are all looking particularly happy, thriving in the warmth and sunshine.

It’s a lovely little contrast to some of the more traditional planting around the gardens and a reminder that, while some plants have struggled with the heat, others simply can’t get enough of it!

Make sure you pop into The Fig House during your next visit and take a closer look. 🌿☀️

🎨 Don’t forget to visit Croome Gallery & Pottery while you’re exploring The Walled Gardens.

There’s much more to discover here than the gardens themselves, and the Gallery & Pottery is always worth making time for during your visit.

As well as browsing the beautiful handmade pottery, you may even get the chance to watch Peter & Sarah at work, throwing and painting pots and seeing first-hand some of the skill that goes into creating each piece.

If you’re looking for something to take home, be sure to have a look through the sale and seconds section too. You never know what you might find!

And don’t forget to venture a little further to discover our secret bothy tucked away at the back. It’s home to a fascinating collection of artefacts and items uncovered during the restoration of the gardens.

🍅 It’s certainly been a good summer for our tomatoes!

We’ve shared plenty from inside The Tomato House recently, where the plants have been thriving in all this sunshine, but they’re not the only ones doing well.

The different varieties growing outside along the south border are also producing plenty of fruit and making the most of their warm, sunny position against the garden walls.

After such a challenging growing season for some of our other fruit and vegetables, it’s lovely to see the tomatoes doing so well.

Take a look along the south border when you next visit and see how many different varieties you can spot.
