First photo dump of the Graphic Novel Reading Room 2026!

I first visited Hay Festival in 2018, and was inspired by the scenes of people sitting in deckchairs, reading books in each others’ company.

Three years later, the Graphic Novel Reading Room was born, and my time in Hay was one of the building blocks of how I want to run these events, and why: providing a sociable but calm space for people to congregate, and read books.

In the process - kind of by accident - I’ve become an advocate for the comics medium, and my goal was always to take comics to places where they otherwise wouldn’t be, especially literary festivals like Hay.

I pitched my event to Hay in 2025, and visited the festival again that year to meet the organisers, and have a good look around with eyes for where GNRR could be at the festival. I proposed a Comics Day to them (like there was a Sports Day that year), and that’s exactly what happened in 2026. (NB and probably some others were also lobbying for comics in the background with Hay so I can’t take full credit for it happening, but I definitely had a role in it!)

A year later, on the 27th May 2026 we had a proper Graphic Novel Day at the Hay festival, with GNRR doing its thing all day, offering comics to read for old and young, for free. Many amazing comic artists were also invited, and we had a proper blast!

Thank you for the organisers who made it happen, and I’m hoping that we managed to make the solid case for comics to be included in future festivals.

More photos to come…

Two days to go until Graphic Novel Day!

I’ll be stationed in the Bookshop Garden (next to the ice cream) to offer hundreds and comics and zines for visitors to read.

Come along to sample the works of comic artists speaking at the festival: - all these are creators for adult audiences in genres of graphic medicine, humour, memoir and non-fiction!

An excellent GNRR in Borth , third year in a row! Thank you so much for inviting me and hosting me ! It’s lovely seeing familiar faces year after year 😊

We also had a conversation with and about comics and protest and Myf’s new book Noisy Valley - but there is no photographic evidence so it might have never happened 😂

And now onto the next stop, Hay Festival!

Huge thanks to Ruth at the who’s been hosting GNRR for five years now - and sometimes even gets to enjoy the event 😊

(A very happy discovery of the day was that they serve affogatos, only the best cold sweet Italian coffee based dessert ever!)

The new date - 16th June - is already up on Eventbrite so you can book for the last event before September! (Link in bio)

Today I’m leaving for my Wales & England tour, wish me luck, there should be lots of pics coming your way!!!

Unfortunately I didn’t have the numbers so I’m postponing until the 19th May, which is the next regular monthly GNRR date in the calendar.

I understand that people are less reluctant to spend money and to commit in advance, but unfortunately without decent numbers and ticket sales it’s not realistic both for me to run the event and for the Treehouse to have their room booked out but having low numbers to attend.

I’ll send a newsletter shortly to explain further, but I basically need more active participation if you GNRR want to continue to enjoy this event.

The bookings are open for the 19th May, and I need ideally 20 people minimum, around £3/hour suggested donation.

Hope to see you in May!

This weekend at the first GNRR will be there to introduce you to the world of comics beyond superheros and the funny pages! Come along to browse and read non-fiction, (auto)biographies, graphic medicine, journalism, travelogues and many other genres in comic format.

I will also be selling second hand comics that are duplicates in my collection, to raise funds for GNRR’s appearance at ’s very first Comics Day on the 27th May.

Come along to the in Kelham Island for an all day extravaganza of bookish joy, including talks, workshops, a marketplace of booksellers, publishers and other book-related vendors AND the Graphic Novel Reading Room in residence.

There are still tickets available for the talks (link in the bio of ), and the marketplace and GNRR will be free to visit - available for all ages (but under 16s need to be under adult supervision).

Hope to see you there!!!

TICKETS STILL AVAILABLE!!!

Due to the general ensh*ttification (sensitisation according to iPhone auto correct) of all technology Eventbrite ticket sales closed this morning for some reason (now open again) and I’ve been unable to send out the usual newsletter via Mailchimp, because us little people who were using the service for free are now not allowed to do so if we have more than 250 contacts.

Rant over! The GOOD NEWS is that there are still tickets left and I also have a bunch of new comics for you to read, some shown in the pics!

Hope to see you tomorrow!!!
