Say no to cuts at the University of Sheffield!

🕣Wednesday 18 December 5:00-6:00pm
📍University Arms pub on Brook Hill (upstairs room)

The University is planning to make big cuts this academic year. These cuts will hit staff, including your teachers, and resources. They will make life at the University worse and more stressful for everyone who studies here.

UoS management have announced that they will make £25 MILLION worth of cuts this academic year – and an additional £21 million after that. This year, £9 million of those cuts will come out of staff.

UoS has already implemented a hiring freeze, which is increasing the workload for all staff. We have to say: no cuts!

Everyone who opposes these cuts is invited to a meeting to plan a campaign to oppose them.

Today we brought our banner to the university concourse to build the anti-cuts campaign.

900+ University staff voted NO CONFIDENCE in university management.
The University announced cuts of £50+ MILLION for this and next academic year.

THIS WILL AFFECT YOU.

£9 MILLION of these cuts will come by sacking staff. That’s your lab techs and lecturers! The rest will come from all directions targeting uni services: they’ve already closed the business school cafe so what’s next?

We stand with staff in support of fair treatment and sensible, democratic running of the University.

We must come together in solidarity to fight the rising hatred of the far fight in our communities with a real socialist alternative. Starmer's labour has weak anti working class policies and general complicity in genocide is landing reform and easy path into office. Let's unite to show the fascist minority they're not welcome on our shores and send them back to where they belong (fiery pits of hell) and show blue labour what real working class solidarity looks like.

Fight Cuts and Rising Tuition Fees!
Protest from 12 noon
Wednesday 30th October
University of Sheffield Concourse

Starmer's Labour government has refused to freeze tuition fees and is predicted to be raising fees by at least £1000 over the next five years.

The UoS is facing a £50m shortfall due to a reduction in student uptake for this academic year, and this reflects the picture nationally. University management will continue to push the government towards increasing tuition fees further whilst internally making cuts to departments and services.

This will adversely affect all students and is particularly damaging to the aspirations and outcomes of working class young people who are already struggling with the cost of living crisis. Rising tuition fees should be seen as disastrous for anyone who hopes for a more equal society. Ordinary people being priced out of higher education exaggerates already existing socio-economic inequalities and stunts the social aspirations of huge portions of society.

If you want to fight for a higher education available to all and believe that the government should be willing to fund the shortfall universities are facing nationally by taxing the rich, not increasing fees for students,
then you should join Sheffield Solidarity Group in the fight for free education and a fairer society.
