About Pen*stone Town Council:

Pen*stone Town Council is the successor body to the Pen*stone Urban District Council, which was abolished in the local government re-organisation of 1974. As such, the chair of Pen*stone Town Council keeps the title of Mayor of Pen*stone. In addition to chairing Town Council meetings, the Town Mayor carries out various civic duties during his/her year of office. A new Mayor is elected at the annual Town Council meeting each May. Our current Mayor is Cllr Andrew Millner; the Deputy Mayor is Cllr Gillian Millner. A list of past Pen*stone Mayors is on a plaque in the Main Hall of St Johns Community Centre. Pen*stone Town Council consists of 15 seats and covers four wards:

Pen*stone (6 seats)
Thurlstone inc. Millhouse Green (3 seats)
Hoylandswaine (2 seats)
Springvale & Cubley (4 seats)

Pen*stone Town Council is a minor authority, operating the Pen*stone Paramount, (used for cinema, theatre, and concert productions) and St John’s Community Centre, which is a vital community resource. The Town Council has an important role in commenting on all local planning applications before they go to the Planning Officers in Barnsley.

PENISTONE TRANSPORT SCHEME PUBLIC ENGAGEMENT MEETINGS

This message is to inform residents of an upcoming period of public engagement for two important local transport schemes:

- the Trans Pennine Trail improvements between Pen*stone and
Wortley and;
- the Pen*stone Station footbridge and car park scheme

Whilst the schemes are separate and not interdependent, the public engagement is being combined for time and cost efficiencies. Residents and businesses near to the schemes will soon be receiving letters notifying them about this engagement period. The letters will include details of the scheme proposals, anticipated time frames, and clear information on how residents can share their feedback. Shown below are the dates, venues and times of the drop-in events, giving residents the opportunity to view and discuss proposals for both schemes with the project teams.

Councillor Mandy Lowe-Flello, a two-time Mayor of Pen*stone, was nominated by Pen*stone Town Council to attend this year’s Royal Garden Party on 12th May. Thankfully the weather kept fine and Councillor Mandy had a wonderful time talking to the Royal Beefeaters and even shook hands with Queen Camilla!

We're currently compiling a new history section on the PTC website which will be published in a few months' time to coincide with the completion of the Town Hall renovations.

The Millennium Patchwork is one of the items that will be featured in the galleries.

We have limited information about this other than the odd clipping in the Heritage Group Archives.

Can anyone help out? Perhaps you have photos of the work in progress; you're one of the members who worked on it (or a relative)?

Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.

please pop in to see the Clerk at the Resource Centre or alternatively email with any information pertaining to this matter to [email protected]

Have your say on South Yorkshire's buses – from Wednesday 25 March to Sunday 17 May

South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority (SYMCA) has launched a survey which sets out some of the first improvements we’ll make when buses come under public control in South Yorkshire from September 2027.

The survey, which is open until midnight on Sunday 17 May, will give passengers, residents, businesses, and community groups the chance to share their experiences and priorities. The questions draw on what people have already told SYMCA about where the network falls short, focusing on improving links to key destinations, closing gaps in coverage and making services more reliable.

Working with local councils, we've used this feedback to help shape the first changes passengers will see in 2027, when buses in South Yorkshire begin moving back under public control for the first time in decades.

Potential priorities for the network include:

• More reliable buses that arrive when you expect them to
• Simple timetables that are easy to read and plan around
• Better evening and weekend services
• Making it easier to travel by bus to hospitals, workplaces, town centres, schools, colleges and the shops

We would like to hear as many views as possible about the proposals in the consultation to help shape a brighter future for public transport in South Yorkshire.

All the information and how to take part is available at southyorkshire-ca.gov.uk/improving-bus-services or by calling Traveline on 0800 952 0002 (weekdays between 07:00 and 19:00 and at weekends/Bank Holidays between 08:00 and 19:00) to request a paper copy.

Over the past year we’ve been listening to passengers, communities and local organisations to understand what matters most when it comes to bus journeys. You’ve told us buses need to turn up on time, reach more places, and be easier to plan and use.

A huge thank you to everyone who continues to support the Pen*stone Paramount — whether you’ve watched a film, enjoyed a live show, or experienced event cinema.

In these challenging times, we truly appreciate that you have chosen to spend your time and hard-earned money at the Pen*stone Paramount.

Since launching our donation scheme last summer, you’ve also helped us by donating an amazing £2,600!

We’ve already put these funds to good use by upgrading our stage lighting to make our live‑event experience even better.

We’re really pleased with the improvements and are extremely grateful for every contribution that is made to help us enhance our iconic venue.

We will keep you updated on how your donations are being used to support the Paramount’s future.

Thank you!

The Pen*stone Paramount team

With your continued support, we look forward to many more years of cinema magic, live entertainment, fun and laughter!
