JD explained: “Your safety and the safety of the passengers is more important than anything. It doesn’t matter if it’s too hot, too cold, if you’re not safe to drive, safety is number one. You cannot be selfish. You know you’re not feeling well, and driving is not right."

Another driver told WSWS reporters, “We had a problem, and they should have told us they’ve resolved it, or at least set out a timeframe, one or two months. But they didn’t tell us anything, both Unite and the transport companies.”

One young worker said, “I haven’t heard anything. Not in the group chats, and not from the union rep.” Asked what he thought about Unite calling off the strike, “It’s bu****it. I think they were ready to just accept any offer.”

The Socialist Equality Party (SEP) has issued an urgent appeal to the Stop the War Coalition (STWC), the leadership of the anti-war movement in Britain, to take action and publicise the plight of Ukrainian socialist Bogdan Syrotiuk, sentenced to 15 years’ imprisonment by the Zelensky regime last Monday for calling for the unity of Ukrainian and Russian workers against the war.

The Socialist Equality Party (UK) has concluded a series of public meetings, “Your Party’s collapse—Time to build the Socialist Equality Party”. A lively discussion followed the opening report at each meeting.

Retail worker Mae said: “The answers were very in-depth and included a lot of historical context, which I liked because communism and socialism are very old concepts now. It was good that there was a lot of historical knowledge and evidence to support the ideas being put forward. It felt like there was a solid foundation.”

Medical student Alenke: “We need a complete upheaval of the existing system. Because we’re not just fighting people here. We are fighting a whole system. And you can’t just replace people from the existing system.”

Pass resolutions in your workplaces, unions, schools and universities demanding his release. Issue public statements of protest. Sign and circulate the petition for his freedom.

The Sosyalist Eşitlik Partisi–Dördüncü Enternasyonal (Socialist Equality Party–Fourth International) opposes this police state repression, defends basic democratic rights and demands the release of all political prisoners. This principled stand does not, however, diminish our irreconcilable political opposition to the CHP and to the New Party.

The New Party's program, led by Özgür Özel, is not a response to the social and democratic aspirations of working people. It is a program designed to confine these aspirations within the framework of the capitalist profit system and the NATO alliance.

The cry, “There is no money,” is the outcome of a redistribution in which the state protects and allows the profits and wealth of the rich and the super-rich to grow, whilst socialising costs and losses and imposing them on the general public. A small elite is growing ever richer, public coffers have been plundered, and new government debt is being incurred solely to become “ready for war”—and the ordinary population, the working class, is expected to foot the bill.

The claim that “there is no money” for public services is a lie. Whether money is available or not is decided politically.

The referral of the country’s most prominent public health official for criminal prosecution is not an inquiry into the origins of COVID-19 but an effort to establish the precedent that any scientific advice which constrains profit is a criminal act.

The same government prosecuting the scientists who studied infectious disease has dismantled the surveillance systems that would measure its return.
