Treak Cliff Cavern in Castleton is famous throughout the world for its unique and large deposits of Blue John stone and houses some of the most beautiful cave formations found in the UK. Take a self-guided audio tour (using your own smart phone), enjoy the amazing views across the Hope Valley, browse the well-stocked gift shop and catch your breath in our newly-refurbished visitor centre, café and

picnic areas. The cavern is open from 9am every day (except 25th December); the last Entry is at 4.00pm (3.00pm between November 1st and February 28th). For ticket bookings please visit bluejohnstone.com

The Cafe On The Cliff @ Treak Cliff Cavern, is now open for takeaway only (closed Mondays and Tuesdays) at present.

The entrance tunnel to Treak Cliff Cavern was originally started in 1745 by miners (originally known as Miller's Mine). The miners dug the narrow tunnel entirely by hand to reach veins of the rare Blue John Stone deep within the hill

A Moment of Discovery at Treak Cliff Cavern

In 1926, Bert Eyre emerged from the end of a small tunnel and carefully climbed down a rope, guided only by the light of a candle held between his teeth.

As he slowly descended, he entered a hidden chamber unlike anything he had seen before. Its walls sparkled with glittering golden cave formations, revealing a breathtaking underground treasure that had remained undiscovered for centuries.

100 years later, visitors to Treak Cliff Cavern can still experience the wonder of this remarkable discovery and marvel at the beauty that greeted Bert on that unforgettable day.
