🔎 This week’s shines a light on the history of our home here at Cutlers’ Hall...

Did you know today’s building is actually the third Cutlers’ Hall?

🏛️ First Hall | 1638-1725
Built on Church Lane for just £155, the first Hall was a stone building with a slate roof.

🏛️ Second Hall | 1725-1832
Built for £422, it eventually fell into disrepair, prompting the Company to resolve to build a new Hall.

🏛️ Third Hall | 1832-Present
Designed by Samuel Worth and Benjamin Broomhead Taylor, the current Hall cost £10,000 to build.

The Hall has continued to evolve, with major extensions in 1867, 1888 and 1927, while the famous steel doors were added in 1964.

Today, Cutlers’ Hall is a Grade II* listed building and has been at the heart of Sheffield’s story for nearly 400 years⚔️

🏛️ Three weeks today, on Saturday 19th September, we’re throwing open the doors to Cutlers' Hall as part of Sheffield Heritage Open Days! 🏛️

While our Guided Tours are now fully booked, you can still explore this magnificent historic building at your own pace with free-flow visits from 10.00am-4.00pm - no need to book, just turn up.

This week’s 🔎 takes us back to a discovery that changed the world... Did you know Sheffield was where stainless steel was born? 🔪

In 1913, Sheffield engineer Harry Brearley produced the first true stainless steel, containing 12.8% chromium and 0.24% carbon. His discovery transformed Sheffield’s cutlery industry and went on to change the world.

Here at Cutlers’ Hall, we have some of the earliest examples in our Muniment Room, including stainless steel knives dating from 1914–1915, presented to the Company by Brearley and others involved in its development.

A remarkable piece of Sheffield’s manufacturing heritage, still preserved at the Hall today!

Applications are now open for the next round of funding, with charities and organisations invited to apply for support towards projects and activities that will make a meaningful difference.

📅 Applications are open until Friday 30th October 2026, with funding decisions made in November. If your organisation could benefit from funding, now is the time to apply!

✨Friday 24 April - Cutlers’ Hall
The swinging 60s are back. This is one of the most important events in our calendar this year, and one of the most enjoyable.

🕺Our 1960s Night isn’t just a fantastic evening out. It’s a chance for our community of Freemen and Friends to come together, have a brilliant time, and make a real difference. Every table filled means more funds going directly to Weston Park Cancer Charity’s See it, Treat it campaign, vital early diagnosis work that is changing lives across our region right now.

A corporate table of 10 is just £500 + VAT. That’s £50 a head for a professional Beatles tribute act, a full buffet, drinks, and dancing in one of Sheffield’s most iconic settings. A ready-made Friday night for your team and clients, and one they won’t forget in a hurry.
