Very sad news today that John Kear has passed away.

John will always have a special place in Sheffield's sporting history. having led Sheffield Eagles to that famous Challenge Cup victory over Wigan in 1998 - the greatest upset in Challenge cup history.

Our thoughts are with his family, friends, former players and everyone at Sheffield Eagles.

Former England and Wales rugby league coach, and renowned broadcaster, John Kear has died at the age of 71.

Reform have brought chaos to our city already. They have lost two councillors in as many weeks.

One is currently suspended over calling N**i's 'visionaries' alongside other vile social media posts. Another has left the party following internal disputes.

Sheffield Reform have lost two councillors in as many weeks. This is their chaos, and voters shouldn't have to put up with it. Sign here to call for them to resign.

Labour steps up to listen and lead

Today, Cllr Fran Belbin was unanimously elected Leader of Sheffield City Council. Fran has lived in Sheffield for 40 years. This afternoon she talked of her love for the city - from growing up with Nanan Beauchief to Nannan Darnall who ran the local chippy.

Since 2021 no party has had an overall majority, and Labour remains the largest party. Labour and Green councillors have agreed to work together to provide leadership and act in Sheffield’s best interests. The Liberal Democrats have walked away.

Fran has made clear that Labour has properly listened to the thousands of conversations we have had across the city this year.

✅ We will fix the pot holes that blight our roads
✅ We will reclaim our high streets from the fake v**e shops
✅ We will help all residents with the cost of living
✅ We will stop fly-tippers from using our streets as their bins
✅ We will give free bus and tram travel for under-18s
✅ We will deliver two new leisure centres at Springs and Concord
✅ We will work with the government to bring stronger rights for renters
✅ We will help all Sheffield young people who lack jobs or training
✅ We will build new affordable homes and new neighbourhoods in Furnace Hill, Attercliffe and Gleadless.

Labour Councillor Zahira Naz has also been elected Deputy Leader of the Council - the first Muslim elected to this position in Sheffield.

Council Leader Fran Belbin said:

“We have listened to what people have told us matters most. Now our job is to get on with it.”

“Labour will work with anyone who genuinely wants to improve people’s lives - but we will always stand against division and hate”.

Statement from Labour spokesperson on suspended Reform UK Councillor's non-apology as reported in the The Star, Sheffield

"Cllr Menday’s statement is high on self-pity and low on remorse. He should be ashamed at the hurt he has caused, not sorry for getting caught out.

"Cllr Menday says that his “overriding principle is that all human beings have an inherent dignity”. Is this the same person who says that the UK has “an almost subhuman underclass”?

"Menday has been a councillor for less than a fortnight. And he is now happily running off “a few thousand miles” away, avoiding his duties but still taking his councillor pay.

"He is treating the people of Woodhouse and Handsworth with contempt. He should resign now.”

Nathaniel Menday openly supports Adolf Hi**er and the N***s while calling his own countrymen ‘fat, ugly and poorly dressed’.

This is a slap in the face for every Sheffield family whose relatives fought and died to keep Britain out of N**i hands.

Menday says that he has no N**i sympathies. So why does he tweet admiringly about swastikas, Hi**er and the SS? And did Reform UK know about Menday’s vile views when they decided he was an appropriate person to represent them?

Cllr Fran Belbin elected as leader of Sheffield Labour Group

Statement from Fran Belbin, Councillor for Firth Park:

“These elections have been tough. Sheffield Labour stood on a positive platform to deliver change for Sheffield - including ending privatisation of public transport, free travel for under-18s, building more affordable homes, improving the state of our roads and neighbourhoods, and making our communities safer.

“But that wasn’t enough. People like what we stood for, but the change they voted for in 2024 isn’t being felt fast enough. We need to build on the work of the last few years under the leadership of Cllr Tom Hunt, that has restored Sheffield’s reputation, brought significant investment into our city - including securing the future of World Snooker at the Crucible - and started to make the Council more responsive to people’s needs.

“There is much more to do. Labour councillors will fight for the people of this city and the things that we know make a difference in our lives. We know we need to do more to involve people right across the city and deliver real visible change in neighbourhoods.

“We are now leading discussions with the Liberal Democrats and Green Party about how we can continue to deliver our shared priorities and reject the division and chaos of Reform UK. Labour will approach these talks constructively, responsibly, and put the interests of Sheffield first.

“The city needs to keep moving forward, with stable leadership that brings people together. People cannot afford the council to drift or our city to be divided. All of us now have a responsibility to step up to that challenge”.
