Sheffield Alliance for Workers Liberty Sheffield branch of the Alliance for Workers' Liberty, a revolutionary socialist organisation fighting to replace capitalism with real democracy and freedom.

The Alliance for Workers' Liberty is a revolutionary socialist organisation that works for the replacement of capitalism with socialism: the collective, humane and democratic running of society in opposition to war, greed and barbarism. We believe that those who create the wealth in society, but don't have ownership of that wealth and power, is the working class. We make up the majority of the world's population, yet power is structured to be run in the interests of a ruling class, the bourgeoisie, who are capitalists and their senior managers, landlords and cheerleaders in the media. We believe the working class has both the numbers and creative potential to run the economy and community in all our interests, democratically. We are active in numerous movements including in the the Labour Party and trade unions, as proud socialist feminists and LGBT rights activists, anti-fascists, fighters for disabled peoples' rights and as campaigners for a 'just transition' to avoid catastrophic climate change. Our activists are militant trade union, student and community campaigners in Sheffield and across the country. We are for international working class solidarity, and support progressive and union struggles across the world, in the face of state oppression, capitalist exploitation, religious extremists and imperialism. Workers' Liberty members were central to local grassroots campaigns, here and nationally, to elect Jeremy Corbyn leader of the Labour Party and continue to campaign for a socialist orientation for Labour and for a more democratic, working class-led Party. We work towards a revolutionary change in society but are determined to win reforms that benefit working class people and allow ideas to develop for an alternative to this system.

An election on 27 October could oust Israel’s far-right regime. Any likely replacement will hardly be any better on the question of Palestinian rights, but ousting the current government could create openings for anti-occupation forces to grow. This talk will survey the struggles of Israel’s binational left and its efforts to build co-resistance between Palestinians and Israeli Jews, towards a horizon of equality.

In recent weeks college students in France have staged a mass nationwide student strike to demand an end to underfunded, crumbling colleges, poor teaching and non-existent mental health support. They are striking for a future.

They have been met with brutal police violence, tear gas and rubber bullets.

This movement is spreading to universities too.

Hear French activists from this movement speak over Zoom at the uni arms on Wednesday and ask them your questions! All welcome.

Far right organisations are growing across the world. In the UK, we have seen the growth of an electoral far-right, in the shape of Reform UK, alongside an often violent far-right street movement, in the milieu around Tommy Robinson. Newer far-right parties such as Restore explicitly seek to be a bridge between street movements and official politics. This panel will discuss how the socialist left should respond: what forms of organisation, and what political perspectives, are necessary to counter the far right?

Girlboss or class war feminism?

We want an anti-capitalist feminism movement, geared to class struggle, and a labour movement and left transformed to finally take women’s struggles seriously.

We recognise that the oppression of women and of trans, non-binary, intersex, and gender-nonconforming people all stem from restrictive gender relations sustained by capitalism. The ability of the working class to act as a universal agent of collective human emancipation means we must integrate the struggles of those sections of our class which face specific forms of oppression into our programme for liberation and equality.

Hear from a socialist feminist activist on how we can win women’s struggles now and replace class society with a socialist alternative.

What do we mean when we talk about socialism? This is an interactive workshop to discuss how things might work differently under socialism, and how we think we can get there. Everybody is welcome!
