The Community Organisers are here to listen to the community and help you turn it into an area where everyone feels they have a say and can prosper. For the coming year we will be coming to you to tell us what makes Sharrow a great place to live and what you, the residents, would like to see in Sharrow to make it even greater. It is your opinion that matters, your activism that makes Sharrow what it is, and your enthusiasm that can turn the negatives in the area into positives.

This Thursday we are organising a Sheffield Care in Crisis meeting at the Old Junior School in Sharrow. If you are, or know anyone who is receiving care, come along to this friendly meeting to share experiences and stories with others and maybe even develop some ideas how we can work together to make things better. The meeting is open to everyone who is interested. Congratulations to Sum Studios in Heeley for doing brilliantly in the Sheffield Design Awards! The only community building in the running, big thumbs up for this crazy beautiful building!

Sum Studios won a total of four awards at the 2014 Sheffield Design Awards at a ceremony at the University Arts Tower on 17th October.

The article does not explain what the councillor thinks are considered as 'good benefits'. The problem however is not only touching people on benefits, as many working families today have to resort to using food banks as well. Cutting people off from the basic necessities that keep you healthy, fit and sane, cannot be used as an incentive to get people into work...and if work can't yield you the self-sufficiency and dignity either, then what is a person to do? When people are going hungry in one of the biggest economies in the world, we have to start wondering what is wrong and where is the money that is not feeding these people?

A Tory councillor who once described golliwogs as "nostalgic, not racist" has called for those on "good benefits" to be banned from using food banks as they can afford food. Dawn Barnett, 72, made the comments despite food bank...

EXCITING NEWS for everyone wanting to VOLUNTEER!
Sharrow Community Forum is starting a new Volunteer Training Programme (accredited and non-accredited!)! The programme will start with a 2-day training on the 21st-22nd November, and the training will be completely FREE for everyone! The training will be followed by a volunteer placement and more training in the community over the next 6 months. To register for the programme and the 2-day training, please find details below!

An important issue featured in the Guardian a few weeks ago through an interview with a Sheffield based women's organisation. They do a fantastic job and provide support for women in desperate situations. Services like these with a real human connections are truly needed in communities.

Women's shelters are closing due to cuts – and those protecting vulnerable ethnic minorites, such as Ashiana in Sheffield, have been especially hard hit. Homa Khaleeli reports
