Sheffield Children’s NHS Foundation Trust is one of only four dedicated children’s hospital trusts in the UK and provides integrated healthcare for children and young people, including community and mental health care as well as acute and specialist services. We see children from 0-16 in most cases and in some cases up to 18. We provide a full range of services for residents of Sheffield and South Yorkshire as well as specialised services for patients from further afield. The Children's Hospital Charity exists to make an extraordinary hospital even better. We keep our specialist services special; providing the best equipment your money can buy, opening new facilities and funding vital research to change lives tomorrow. We make the clinical more comfortable; transforming the hospital space and adding the little touches that make a big difference to families. Together with all our supporters and staff, we do it for the kids.

💙 This International Stammering Awareness Day, let us introduce you to Denny 💙

Denny’s story is one that has inspired everyone at Sheffield Children’s.

He first visited us when he was just three. Over the years, he’s worked closely with our Speech and Language Therapy team, to understand and embrace his stammer.

Recently, 13-year-old Denny stood in front of his teachers at Newfield School to teach them about stammering – what it feels like, how to support students, and why stammering is simply a difference, not a limitation. His confidence and honesty left a lasting impact.

Denny now hopes to make school – and the wider world – a more understanding place for people who stammer.

As we approach our 150th anniversary next month, Denny’s journey reminds us why we’re here: to help children grow, thrive and find their voice.

“Stammering doesn’t hold you back.” – Denny

“Teams at Sheffield Children’s gave me the belief that I could succeed"💛

Whilst many might associate the year 1958 with the worldwide hula hoop craze, or huddling around a brand-new, black and white, swivel-screen television, watching Blue Peter dazzle across screens for the very first time, 1958 has a very different meaning for 69-year-old Paul.

That year, at less than a year old, Paul visited Sheffield Children’s for the first time.

As a youngster, Paul was cared for by specialists after being born with a cleft lip and palate, and underwent a procedure every year with the support of medical teams at Sheffield Children’s, until the age of sixteen when he moved onto adult care.

That wasn’t where Paul’s connection with Sheffield Children’s ended, however. Years later, Paul returned to Sheffield Children’s and met his wife, Ann Marie, who was completing her training to become a nurse.

Reflecting on his time at Sheffield Children’s, Paul had one clear message for the teams who supported him by delivering outstanding care throughout his stay.

“Thank you. Thank you for everything that you’ve done for me and for helping to make me the person that I am today.”

For 150 years, Sheffield Children’s has been a key player in the lives of generations of children and young people across South Yorkshire and beyond. Now, nearly 70 years after Paul’s first visit to Sheffield Children’s, he sat down with us to share his story:

Play is childhood. Together, we're investing in its future 💙

Sheffield Children’s is receiving an incredible funding boost towards play services thanks to Sheffield Children’s Hospital Charity!

Childhood does not stop at the door to healthcare. Play has always been at the heart of healthy childhoods, helping children make sense of the world, build relationships, develop skills and find joy. We are reducing trauma, improving outcomes, protecting childhood and ensuring every child experiences the best possible care.

The Charity has pledged to raise £1.8 million towards play services at Sheffield Children’s over the next five years, starting with their 2026 Christmas Appeal.

Since 1876, Sheffield Children’s has recognised that treating and supporting a child in their important developmental years involves more than delivering excellent clinical care. it requires protecting the experiences that allow children to grow, develop and flourish.

Sheffield Children’s Hospital Charity funding will help Sheffield Children’s to go even further for children and families, expanding opportunities for play through training, resources and technology. By tailoring the healthcare approach to a child's individual strengths, needs and circumstances, Sheffield Children’s can create experiences that are more responsive, supportive and child-centred.

💙 Back in the Do It For You Days 💙

There aren’t many bigger fans of Do It For You Day than Harrison - “I went every single year, I absolutely loved it!”

Do It For You Day is a free activity day for children and young people who have received treatment for cancer or a bone marrow transplant at Sheffield Children’s, kindly funded by Sheffield Children’s Hospital Charity.

You might remember Harrison, who first visited the Hospital to receive treatment for a brain tumour when he was just ten years old.

Now 21, he ran a whopping 54km in a single day from his front door to Sheffield Children’s Hospital earlier this year.

Research has shown that young people like Harrison who’ve received cancer care have lower levels of physical fitness than their peers and this continues through into adult life, impacting on their future health.

Do It For You Day is just one of the ways that Sheffield Children’s provides opportunities for children to be active and take part in new sports.

Harrison said: “Being active is really important to me as it's something I kept consistent with before my treatment, during and after my treatment.

“I went to Do It For You Day every single year, I absolutely loved it!

“I started going in 2016, my clearest memories are of playing football as that was my favourite sport but every year I just loved going round and trying every sport. It was the perfect day for me. I enjoyed the races after lunch – even though I never won – but loved it as my whole family had a go in their own races and I got to run with my brother.

“I would 100% recommend Do It For You Day to anyone and everyone. I think it’s an amazing event and a great day out.”

Thank you Harrison! If you would like to follow Harrison’s lead and come along, please email [email protected] to let us know – we can’t wait to see you there!

As we continue to mark 150 years of Sheffield Children’s and 50 years of our charity, we’re sharing stories of the incredible people who have been part of our journey 💙

Today, we're sharing Martha's story 💛

When three-year-old Martha suffered a burn injury following an accident with a kettle, she was rushed to Sheffield Children’s Emergency Department before receiving specialist treatment on our Burns Unit.

Thanks to the incredible care she received, Martha’s burns fully healed, and today you wouldn’t even be able to spot them!

Her dad, Tom, said: “Martha’s incident highlighted to us how suddenly any family may need urgent hospital care.”

So grateful for the care their daughter received, Tom and his wife Caroline wanted to give something back. Through their Sheffield-based family business, Hamilton Plant Hire, they proudly added our charity logo to their fleet of vehicles to show their support and help raise awareness of our work, as well as getting involved in other fundraising initiatives, like our Snowflake Appeal.

Five years after Martha’s accident, the family returned to Sheffield Children’s to personally thank the teams who helped their daughter recover.

Martha’s story is a reminder of the difference specialist care can make, and how families like hers can help make a difference for others 💙

Meet Coby, Jude and Lyla! 💛

Brothers Coby and Jude receive regular care at Sheffield Children’s for cystic fibrosis, while their older sister Lyla recently underwent surgery at the hospital following an injury during trampoline training. Jude is also supported by the hospital’s hearing services.

The family's experiences with Sheffield Children's have spanned many years now and to say thank you for the care all three children have received, the Fillingham family are regular faces at our Glow in the Park event.

Mum, Laura, said: "Glow In The Park was so heart-warming last year, seeing all the supporters for Sheffield Children’s – somewhere that has helped us an unmeasurable amount."

This year's event takes place on Tuesday 8 December with our festive 2k (starting at 5.30pm) or 5k (setting off at 7.30pm) to help raise funds for our Christmas appeal, supporting play across Sheffield Children’s.

How amazing is this?! Sheffield Steelers goalie Matt Greenfield has very kindly donated his mask to our charity in support of our Emergency Department appeal 🧡🖤

Our appeal is aiming to raise £6.3 million towards the £20 million redevelopment of the Emergency Department at Sheffield Children's, creating safer, purpose-built clinical environments, improving patient flow and providing children with greater privacy, dignity and comfort at an incredibly difficult time.

Matt has worn the mask for the entire 2025/26 season in every home and away game and, as well as the mask, the lucky raffle winner will also receive two tickets to a home game this season, with a meet and greet on the bench after the game to present the mask.

Thank you so much to Matt and the Sheffield Steelers family for supporting our Emergency Department!

We love our new space thanks to OVO Spaces!💙

Earlier this year, we moved into our new office at Fountain Precinct. We’re delighted with the new space and how it meets the needs of the charity, and this is thanks to the fantastic team at OVO Spaces.
As a long-term supporter of Sheffield Children’s Hospital Charity, OVO Spaces was the perfect partner to bring our new workspace to life. Their team created flexible working areas, vibrant breakout spaces, and practical storage solutions to suit our needs.

But our relationship with OVO Spaces goes far beyond our office. They’re also a valued member of our Children’s Champions membership club - a community of businesses and philanthropic individuals committed to making a difference to children and families at Sheffield Children’s.

Children’s Champions provide vital support to help fund projects, equipment and facilities that improve care and create brighter experiences.

To learn more about what it means to be a Children's Champion like OVO Spaces, visit sheffieldchildrens.org/childrenschampions

Thank you for your continued support, OVO Spaces, and for all your help getting us settled into our new home! ✨
