Good morning and a merry Christmas to you all.
Thank you for all the messages of support over the course of the year, it is appreciated. Whilst we may not be back on home turf and in our own station, yet, RNLI Cromer have been very accommodating and helpful whilst we use there facilities and space at Cromer. There is still lots going on in the background regarding our building, we will keep you up to date on here as and when we get more information.

For now though, whilst we may not be back on service as yet, spare a thought for those that are during the festive period.

Merry Christmas.

The future of our lifeboat station continues to look bright.

"NNDC has agreed to enter into a new 25-year lease for the Sheringham Lifeboat Station"

North Norfolk District Council’s Cabinet today approved two measures to build on its successful partnership with the RNLI - a new long-term lease for the Lifeboat Station in Sheringham and works to enable the return of the Henry Blogg Museum to the Rocket House in Cromer.

On Friday we held a retirement dinner for our Lifeboat Operations Manager Brian Farrow (30 years service), and to celebrate the amazing commitment to the RNLI some of our other recently retired volunteers including Steve Banks (20 years service). We were also able to present Clive Rayment with his 50 year service medal, an incredible commitment to the RNLI.

Good evening all.

We have some exciting news to share with you all:

Please see below the RNLI’s media release regarding the future of Sheringham’s Lifeboat Station.

RNLI to explore works to make Sheringham lifeboat station building safe

The RNLI’s intention is to continue a lifesaving service from the current Sheringham lifeboat station by completing the remedial works required to make the building safe for its volunteers to operate.

All activity at Sheringham RNLI was suspended in January 2025 after analysis of a survey of the lifeboat station building resulted in serious safety concerns. Findings indicate the building may be at the end of its lifespan and that fact, combined with what is already known about the instability of the land behind, has led to increased safety concerns.

The RNLI’s main priority is the safety of its people. We will now finalise plans to make the building safe. Any work at the lifeboat station will be subject to conditions, which include being able to extend the lease and secure planning permission from North Norfolk District Council.

George Pickford, RNLI Interim Head of Region, said: ‘We are grateful for the patience shown by our volunteers and the community as we reviewed the different options for the future of Sheringham RNLI and came to this decision. As a charity we must carefully consider how we use our donors’ money. This decision will ensure the RNLI provides a sustainable lifesaving service across this stretch of coastline and will support our volunteers’ desire to save lives at sea.’

In the meantime, our intention is for lifeboat crew from Sheringham to temporarily operate their Atlantic 85 lifeboat from Cromer lifeboat station following a successful assessment and trials. They will join Cromer’s D class and Tamar lifeboat to form a lifesaving capability to meet the demands of this stretch of coastline.

Peter Sampson, Sheringham RNLI Lifeboat Management Chair, said:

‘We are pleased a decision has been reached and there is a commitment to repairing the lifeboat station at Sheringham.

‘It’s been a frustrating time for us, but this is positive news. We are looking forward to resuming operations from Sheringham and getting back to what we do best, saving lives at sea.’

We’re very sorry to announce that there will be no Lifeboat Day in Sheringham this year due to the ongoing structural issues affecting our lifeboat station.

We understand how much this event means to the local community and our supporters, and we share your disappointment. Please be assured that we will keep you informed as soon as we have any updates regarding the station’s future.

In the meantime, we would like to express our heartfelt thanks for the incredible support we have received from local organisations and individuals during this challenging time. Your encouragement truly means a great deal to us all.

As most people are aware - our lifeboat station is temporarily closed pending further building survey work - as a result we have had to postpone our recruitment days (the first of which was to be this Sunday).
Apologies for any inconvenience.
Unfortunately we have no updates about the station or when we will be able to resume service at this time.

As you will now see in the media, our station is temporarily closed pending further investigation, the full news release from the RNLI Media Team is below.
As a result we are also postponing our planned recruitment open days until normal service is resumed.

News Release:

All activity at Sheringham RNLI has been suspended with immediate effect after analysis of a structural survey of the lifeboat station building resulted in serious safety concerns.

An independent structural engineer inspected the building and its position against the cliff just before Christmas 2024, with the full report being available in January 2025.

Initial findings indicate that the lifeboat station building may be at the end of its lifespan and that fact, combined with what is already known about the land behind, has led to increased safety concerns.

Anna Heslop, RNLI Regional Operations Lead, North and East, said: ‘We have taken the incredibly difficult decision to suspend all activity, including lifesaving operations, at Sheringham RNLI immediately.

‘Keeping our people safe is our number one priority, it takes courage to speak up about what could go wrong, and that’s what happened here – but we don’t underestimate just how hard this is for our Sheringham volunteers who are, rightly, proud of their part in the RNLI’s purpose of saving lives at sea.

‘The station backs onto steep land that may be at risk of sliding forward. We had an inspection on our lifeboat station building and we’ve responded swiftly to initial findings about its condition.

‘A monitoring system has been in place – but, on further analysis on Thursday 30 January with a wider group of estates experts, the nature of the risk to the safety of our people was deemed too high to mitigate and manage by the monitoring system alone.

‘We want people to volunteer, and work, in the safest possible environment. The expertise offered on 30 January tells us that we must keep our people out of the station for now and have further work done to fully understand the condition of the building.’

Search and rescue cover is being provided by Wells RNLI and Cromer RNLI, Sheringham’s flanking stations.
