🚨 May Update 🚨

HM Coastguard Southend attended 4️⃣7️⃣ incidents in May, with officers responding to 3️⃣8️⃣ callouts in just one week. With glorious weather and climbing temperatures, thousands of people visited Southend's beaches over the Bank Holiday Weekend and Half Term break, contributing to a number of active days for the team.

June has already proved to be busy for HM Southend Coastguard, with three incidents within a 24 hour period. Yesterday, Coastguard Rescue Officers were tasked to assist a casualty near the beach, before later attending two back-to-back incidents.

The first of those two incidents was to coordinate a search for a person for who had reportedly entered the water near the pier. Coastguard Rescue Officers conducted searches along the shoreline between the pier and The Castle pub, with nothing seen or heard. The team were then stood down with thanks.

Shortly after, the team were then re-tasked to investigate reports of a person in a RHIB (Rigid-Hull Inflatable Boat) who had come into difficulty off the marshes near Two Tree Island. With help from RNLI Southend Lifeboat, the casualty was safely brought back to the slipway and checked for injuries. The team then returned to station.

🚨 Southend Coastguard Safety Advice 🚨

This past week has been a very busy period for HM Coastguard Rescue Teams across the UK and Southend CRT has seen incidents at levels not seen for this time of year due to the recent heatwave.

Sadly across the UK there have been 9 lives lost. This coincides with the latest statistics released by the National Water Safety Forum's 2025 Water Incident Database (WAID, which gives insight into water-related fatalities in the UK.

Many of those who sadly lost their lives were not intending to enter the water, with cold water shock remaining a hazard. Cold water shock is the body’s involuntary response to sudden immersion in cold water. It causes gasping, panic and loss of swimming ability.

If you find yourself in trouble in the water, remember Float To Live – float on your back with your ears submerged until you can control your breathing and become more acclimatised to the water temperature.

Move your arms gently to help keep you afloat. We all float differently, so it doesn't matter if your legs sink.

If you see someone in difficulty at the coast, call 999 and ask for the Coastguard

With the heatwave continuing yesterday on the hottest day of the year thus far coupled with half term holidays HM Coastguard Southend experianced another busy day.

Southend Coastguard responded to another 11 incidents on Tuesday making that a total of 38 incidents Coastguard Officers have responded to in only a space of 7 days thus far, with the team out again from 4.30am this morning on another tasking.

We can not go into details on every incident but we continued to respond to reports of persons reported missing and water rescues throughout the day.

We continue to work with and thank our wider SAR partners Essex Police East of England Ambulance Service NHS Trust RNLI Southend Lifeboat and our Coastguard Rescue Team flank teams from other areas for their support as we work through this extremelly busy period.

We ask that if you do find yourself in water to please follow the below:

REMEMBER:
If you find yourself in the water unexpectedly
1️⃣ Fight your instinct to thrash around
2️⃣ Lean back
3️⃣ Gently move your arms and legs to help you float
4️⃣ Catch your breath - float until you can control your breathing
5️⃣ Swim to safety if you can. Or raise a hand and call for help

Should you see anyone in trouble on or near the coast, don’t hesitate to dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard, you could save someone’s life!

With the heatwave due to continue today and across this half term holidays we hope you are all enjoying your time spent at the coast.

HM Coastguard Southend had another busy day on bank holiday Monday attending a further 6 incidents yesterday. This takes the total incidents attended over the 3 day long weekend to 18 in total.

We can not go into detail on every incident but yesterday the team had to deal with multi dynamic incidents with persons extracted from the water and medical extractions supporting East of England Ambulance Service NHS Trust

One such incident attended last night required the extraction of a casualty who had tombstoned (jumped into water) from Gypsy bridge Westcliff and seriously injured themselves which required multi services working together to stablise the casualty before extraction from the location. A helimed helicopter landed near the scene to provide additional support and we wish the casualty a full recovery.

We can always learn from such activities which may appear fun at the time but can go horribly wrong.
1. Think before you leap in this hot weather. You don’t always know what you’re jumping into
2. Tombstoning from piers, cliffs, rocks or other structures into the sea can be very dangerous
3. The depth of water can dramatically change with the tide here in Southend.
4. You don’t know what hazards may be lurking under the surface until you are hurt or worse
5. The shock of cold water may make it difficult to swim safely and strong currents can quickly sweep you away. This is especially so around Barge Pier on the Garrison. These currents can sweep you under the surface (where there are multi obstructions) and quickly out into open sea in that locale

Should you see anyone in trouble on or near the coast, don’t hesitate to dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard, you could save someone’s life!

We hope you are all enjoying this glorious weather this bank holiday weekend here on our coastline and we wish everyone a fun and safe bank holiday Monday today.

HM Coastguard Southend have been extremely busy attending water based incidents over the past 2 days, attending 3 incidents on Saturday and a further 9 incidents on Sunday (yesterday).

We can not go into detail on every incident but yesterday the team had to deal with multi dynamic incidents with missing persons in the water of all ages and the rescuing of persons from the water who were struggling to keep afloat.

Our community as always were quick to report incidents as they saw them and called 999 and asked for the Coastguard, seconds count when water incidents are involved and we wish those who needed any hospital treatment well for their recovery.

As always such incidents involve multi partners and we would like to thank Essex Police, East of England Ambulance Service NHS Trust and RNLI Southend Lifeboat and our HM Coastguard Canvey Island, Dover MRCC & Helo 363 colleagues for their assistance yesterday on what ended up being 7hrs of incidents one after the other for the teams.

REMEMBER:
If you find yourself in the water unexpectedly
1️⃣ Fight your instinct to thrash around
2️⃣ Lean back
3️⃣ Gently move your arms and legs to help you float
4️⃣ Catch your breath - float until you can control your breathing

🚨 Safety Advisory This Bank Holiday Weekend/Half Term 🚨

Tempatures are now increasing and beaches packed with families enjoying this glorious weather and our Coastguard Rescue Team stand ready to respond to help keep you all safe.

Yesterday our team attended 3 water based incidents and we ask families visiting our seafront and beaches today to please keep a close watch on your friends, family and 'each other'.

If you see anyone entering the water and who look to be in trouble or distress, don't hesitate and call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.

Please this bank holiday:
☔️ Check weather and tide times
🕑 Leave plenty of time to get back
📱 Take a fully charged phone so you can call for help if needed
🍺 Don’t drink and drown, don’t walk home alone, check your mates are safe and avoid routes near water
🦄 Leave inflatables at home, blow-up toys and airbeds are designed for pools, not the sea where they can easily be swept out
🥶 Cold water / cold water shock can be silent and deadly! The average UK temp, all year round, is a chilly 11 degrees. Even on the warmest of days. It kills!

Spread the message. Share the post. Potentially save a life. 👊
