Last week, 3 of our cadets went on annual camp to RAF Leeming. Whilst on the camp, they stayed in tents and got to engage in multiple activities across the station. One of these activities was flying, which enabled our cadets to receive their blue wings 👏

Last week, some of our cadets were able to visit and take part in the National Air and Space Camp industry day at RAF Syerston. Here, cadets were able to visit different stalls to learn about employment routes, meet cadets and officers from all across the country, and of course get to see some of the aircraft used by the RAF on the ground and in the sky. Thank you to 54 (Eastbourne) Squadron for some of the photos and also to some of our cadets for the amazing aircraft photos!!

Over the last fortnight, we unfortunately had to say goodbye to 2 of our flight sergeants. They have done amazing things for this squadron and they will be missed by everyone at 1440. The rest of the squadron have been up to other activities like first aid training. Cadets came to help casualties in a mock car crash, helping them learn life saving skills.

2 Weeks ago, 6 of our cadets went off on the national adventure training camp in the Lake District. Cadets underwent plenty of activities such as hiking, rock climbing, paddle sports and ziplining. They met over 20 other cadets from across Sussex, and made some friends for life. Thank you to all of the staff that helped to set up this amazing camp!!

Tonight, cadets underwent OPERATION WATCHFUL EAGLE, a team building, choose your own adventure style competition. During this competition, teams compete to manage different scores, whilst deciding what to do during events. The cadets had lots of fun and friendly competition with eachother whilst operating their own fictional RAF. Congratulations to the winning team, the Jackson 3, and to Cadet Marshall on completing his blue shot badge.

𝗖𝗮𝗻 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗵𝗲𝗹𝗽 𝘂𝘀 𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗳𝗮𝗺𝗶𝗹𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝗙𝗿𝗲𝗱𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗸 𝗗𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴?

1440 (Shoreham) Squadron RAF Air Cadets is appealing to the local community for help in tracing the relatives of Frederick Dearing, a remarkable young man from Shoreham / Southwick who served with the Royal Flying Corps during the First World War.

Frederick enlisted in the Army at just 𝟭𝟱 𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘀 𝗼𝗹𝗱, having overstated his age. He later transferred to the Royal Flying Corps and became an air observer, flying operational missions over the Western Front. Tragically, he was killed in aerial combat on 26 September 1916, 𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗱 𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝟭𝟲. He is believed to have been one of the youngest – and quite possibly the youngest – Royal Flying Corps airman to be killed in action during the First World War.

In recognition of his sacrifice, a new housing development in Shoreham includes a building named Dearing House in his honour.
1440 (Shoreham) Squadron is working with Southern Housing and Adur District Council to help organise the official opening ceremony for Dearing House. As part of the event, we hope to tell Frederick's story and ensure that his service and sacrifice are remembered by future generations.

Although Frederick never married and had no children, we understand that his brothers and sisters survived the war and went on to have families of their own. We therefore believe there may still be members of the Dearing family living in Shoreham, Southwick or elsewhere in the Adur area.
If you are related to Frederick Dearing, know someone who may be, or have any information about the Dearing family, we would be delighted to hear from you. We would very much like to invite members of Frederick's family to attend the opening ceremony and be part of this important occasion.

On Tuesday, cadets had to complete a task in which they had to cross a river of "shark infested custard" using materials such as wooden planks and barrels. Despite a valiant attempt, the task inevitably failed on the first try, however they managed to complete it successfully on their second. The cadets learnt the importance of teamwork, which strengthened morale and friendship, whilst also maintaining discipline and order. Well done to all of the cadets that passed blue leadership.
