Yet more recent maintenance work by our fantastic set of volunteers at the site - just look at the difference on this stretch of masonry. Slowly, more of the Abbey becomes defined and gives our visitors a better understanding.

Of significance, two chamfered Grinshill stone plinth bases were revealed from vegetation cover. These are believed to be the stones referenced in Palmer and West’s excavation report at the top of the second column of text on page 149.

The bedrock referred to in the report is also visible. The rock was left uncleared to maintain a distinction between the natural feature and the hard-capped stone of the consolidated remains.

Sadly, we have had to close our chapter house at site for the foreseeable future due to some structural issues which have appeared. Please do bear this in mind when visiting the site, and observed the measures we’ve had to put in for safety reasons. When we have the bigger picture of what’s happened, which is always tenuous with very old buildings, we will let people know and we will do our upmost to have the problem resolved as soon as practically possible.
Thanks.
