Shrewsbury MP Julia Buckley attended our offices last Friday to meet with local employers and support agencies in Shrewsbury. Julia met with members of the Enable team to hear about what we do and how we support organisations to find untapped talent, upskill staff and help people with barriers to employment find the right role for them.

Later in the afternoon we were joined by the Shropshire Chamber of Commerce for a roundtable discussion on the barriers too many neurodivergent people still face when trying to access and stay in work. A huge thank you to all of the attendees for coming along.

If you think you or someone you know would benefit from employment support, please check out our website for more information: https://orlo.uk/UOs1F

I see so much positivity promoting looking after our mental wellbeing and challenging stigma in its direct and more subtle forms. It’s fair to say we have made many strides in the right direction. When you go through these things yourself you tend to stay attuned to all things around Mental Health.

Despite positive steps, I have also encountered the blasé brushing off of mental health issues. I hear the “just get on with it” mindset that I view with upmost respect as a generational remnant from war time era Britain. But equally know how those with mental ill health and trauma were treated then, how assumptions were made and societal pressures kept those that could be silent to remain silent in their struggles. A ‘stiff upper lip’ is not how we should approach Mental Health now but it is still a pattern for some in modern life.

I read on social media these strong polarised views and assumptions around mental ill health. This makes me admire Scandinavian concepts of slowing down our lifestyles, quality of time over productivity, of café’s and libraries, where face to face interaction and connecting with others involve no Wi-Fi, no screens, the digital detox. It all sounds wonderfully enticing. I often think we are more connected digitally yet more lonely spiritually and emotionally.

It’s about moderation, the internet connects others to social groups, art groups, walking groups, and places where support and non-judgment can be found. This mental health awareness week I would recommend scrolling less and finding a human connection for an activity that helps you to feel more like yourself.

After being a full time carer for my two neurodivergent sons for 18 years, returning to work as an Expert by Experience has been a huge but very positive change for me. As an autistic person, the idea of going back into employment felt exciting but also quite nerve racking. I had spent so long focused on caring that I wasn’t sure how I would adjust or whether I would feel confident again, as a lack of confidence was a huge issue for me. But returning to work has helped my mental health in ways I didn’t expect, and it feels especially important to share this during Mental Health Awareness Week.

For nearly two decades, my days were filled with appointments, routines, and constant responsibility. Caring can be rewarding, but it also brings emotional pressure and very little time for yourself. Those years taught me resilience, patience, and compassion, even if I didn’t always recognise those strengths at the time. However, I worried about whether I would cope in a workplace after being away for so long.

What I’ve learned is that I have far more to offer than I initially realised. Coming back into work has reminded me that I’m not only a carer, I’m someone with valuable skills and lived experience that can really help others. The skills I learned through caring, like problem solving, staying calm under pressure, and understanding people’s needs, are all useful in my role and I feel a sense of achievement knowing that my experience matters.

Many of us allow our job roles and careers to define us, yet we are much more. I am more interested in how someone treats others and their values than ‘work talk’. Of course I admire hard work, determination, mixed with life balance and being grounded. I have been sent fleeing in anxious panic from groups and social situations when asked “what do you do?” especially when I had no job due to my mental ill health. It’s crushing, disempowering being unemployed.

At times when I was out of work I felt I over embellished on what little I manged to achieve, later I learnt that being proud of an achievement was a good thing.

Returning to work, shifted my mindset in seismic ways. I found fire and hunger to achieve, I found I needed to work at a pace I could manage, where my potential could be seen even when I cannot always see it myself. Simple in work adjustments allow me to perform at my best. Indeed, my self-awareness and recognising unhealthy patterns appeared as boldly as an additional ADHD diagnosis did. The ‘if only’ hit me hard, wondering what I could have achieved if I had access to support sooner.

So, that question, asked again - What do you do? I share my story. To inspire, to be realistic, break down barriers, educate, challenge stigma and misconceptions. My unique perspective aids in communication and understanding, to bridge gaps and to point them out. I get to make a small difference whilst working with an amazing group of people all, willing to share their lived experience and expertise to have an impact.

I'm Nicki Evans - Expert by Experience Coordinator.

I began part-time working three years ago, with the help of Enable. It transformed my life and opened a window into the world after several years of isolation. My confidence and self-esteem gradually returned; I realised that, despite my initial self-doubt, I was capable of doing a job that I liked and which I was good at. Being part of an organisation and developing good working relationships with my colleagues has been a vital part of my mental health recovery. I really enjoy the job I do and the people I work with.

Since then, other aspects of my life have improved. I began cycling again and challenging myself to get out of the house more, which has helped my anxiety. I also resumed my regular home workouts, which keeps me fit and mobile, as well as reducing my chronic depression. After a long struggle, I am an improved version of myself and feel better all round than I have done for many years. The future is no longer unknown and scary; it is exciting and full of possibilities.
