Closure of A495 Whittington Road.

🚧 From 7 September for approx. seven weeks a section of the A495 Whittington Road will be closed from the junction of Garrison Avenue up to the junction with Whittington Roundabout (A5).

The road closure will be in place to enable construction of a new vehicular and pedestrian access into the Artillery Point development together with associated road improvements and resurfacing.

👷‍♂️ The work is being carried out by Read Construction.

During the closure a signed diversion route will be in place via Gobowen. Access for pedestrians and neighbouring properties will be maintained.

❗ Read Construction say:

“We appreciate that these works may cause some inconvenience to local residents, businesses and road users. The safety of residents, road users and our workforce is our priority, and we will continue to monitor the traffic management arrangements throughout the works to minimise disruption.”

A former derelict bank in the heart of Bridgnorth has been transformed into a thriving bakery and community hub, thanks to the determination of a local business owner and support from grant funding programmes.

For more than 30 years, baker John Powers has built his career on producing high-quality bread and baked goods. In 2025, he and his partner Fiona took the bold decision to move Catherine’s Bakery from its smaller premises into a vacant former bank on Bridgnorth High Street.

Today, the building is once again bustling with activity. Customers can buy freshly baked bread, rolls and cakes while watching them being made on-site, creating a unique experience that has helped the independent business grow and attract visitors from across the region.

The ambitious move was supported by two grants: a £10,000 Small Equipment Grant alongside a £55,000 grant from the West Midlands Growth Programme both funded through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund, each of which contributed towards 50% of the total costs. The funding helped cover renovation work and the purchase of equipment needed to transform the building into a working bakery and retail space.

UPDATE FROM SEVERN TRENT

We've received an important update regarding Severn Trent's ongoing overnight surveys along the riverside in Shrewsbury, between English Bridge and Greyfriars Bridge.

Severn Trent say:

Thank you to everyone for your patience while we continue our overnight surveys along the riverside in Shrewsbury. Due to some additional work being required on site, we now need a little more time to complete our surveys between English Bridge and Greyfriars Bridge.

The temporary closure of this section of towpath will therefore remain in place until Friday 4 September 2026.

We're pleased that disruption has remained minimal so far, and we'd like to thank residents, businesses and towpath users for their understanding while this important work takes place.

These surveys will help us better understand the local network, plan future improvements and continue protecting the River Severn for the community 💧

✅ No impact to your water or wastewater services
✅ Work taking place overnight where possible
✅ Site signage updated with the revised completion date

We appreciate your continued support and look forward to reopening the route as soon as this phase of work is complete.
