On Thursday 25th June from 10:00am, members of West Mercia Police Prevention Hub, will be in the Quarry, Shrewsbury issuing Bike Register kits free of charge.

Bike Register is a property marking system used to reduce bicycle theft and help police identify and return stolen bikes. They combine anti-tamper and forensic marking technology with a national registration database, making it far harder for offenders to sell or dispose of stolen bikes. Officers can check QR codes, serial numbers, frame markings and SelectaDNA codes to confirm ownership via BikeRegister National Cycle Database.

How it works?
• Each kit contains a two QR coded anti-tamper security ID labels
• One applied to act a visual deterrent, one hidden slightly to prevent tampering
• With a Police verified account we scan the QR code to link a bike to its rightful owner

Why is it used?
• Deter theft, as marked bikes are harder to sell and easier to trace
• Increase recovery rates of stolen bikes
• Support crime prevention events and community engagement
• Reduce repeat victimisation
• Helps return recovered bikes and supports prosecutions.

You will need to bring your bike along to get them registered and stickers applied.

See you there.

PCSO Blakemore has attended McDonald's on Meole Brace Retail Park today to share information and resources to the staff there around signs to look for around county lines activity.

Child safeguarding is everyone's responsibility but some roles and establishments are uniquely positioned to give more insight into the lives of children and young people. That's why our outreach work is targeted to such locations and it's important that we provide education and clear routes on how to report concerns.

Thank you to McDonalds' staff for being open to this learning - if something doesn't feel right, it might not be.

A man has been jailed for more than 13 years for violent offences against a woman, including r**e and assault.

Leighton Smith, of Lancaster Road in Shrewsbury, was sentenced at Shrewsbury Crown Court yesterday (Monday 1 June) for one count of r**e, five counts of actual bodily harm and one count of witness intimidation.

During an earlier trail the court heard how in 2024 the 36-year-old subjected his victim to a series of abuse, before police were made aware in 2025.

Following an investigation by Shropshire's Protecting People Unit, Smith was arrested and charged. Smith denied the charges, resulting in the case going to trial, where he was found guilty of the offences by a jury in May.

Yesterday the judge handed him a 13-and-a-half-year sentence, as well as a 15-year restraining order against the victim. Smith will also be placed on the s*x offenders register for life.

Detective Constable Daniel Bushell said: "This case represents a significant outcome against a highly dangerous and violent perpetrator. The seriousness of his offending and the lengths he went to intimidate the victim were fully tested before the court.

"The victim in this case showed exceptional courage, and her decision to support the investigation, not only brought accountability and justice for what happened to her, but has also prevented further harm to others. I am grateful for her courage.

DC Bushell continued: "This result was made possible through sustained, victim‑focused policing. From the initial response at incidents, through safeguarding, relationship‑building to the detailed and relentless investigative work, officers remained committed despite the challenging nature of the case. This persistence, combined with the victims courage, meant the full extent of the offending was uncovered and placed before the jury.

"The sentences given to Smith reflects the gravity of the abuse and the danger he presents to women. This outcome is a clear demonstration that we will not walk away from such offences, and even though getting justice may take time with determination and the bravery of victims, it can be achieved."

Three teenagers have been arrested following disorder in Shrewsbury yesterday (Wednesday 27 May).

At around 7.18pm officers were called to reports of a large disorder near The Quarry in the town centre.

Two 16-year-old boys, and a 17-year-old boy, were arrested at the scene on suspicion of affray. Two remain in police custody, while one of the 16 year olds has been released on bail.

Enquiries are ongoing into the incident, and officers are expected to remain in the area today.

A Section 34 Dispersal Order has also been put in place in Shrewsbury town centre until 7.45pm tomorrow (Friday 29 May). The order provides extra powers to the police to exclude individuals aged over 10 who cause antisocial behaviour.

The dispersal powers can also be used to remove those committing crime and disorder not only when they have occurred or are occurring, but when they are deemed likely to occur and in any locality.

Chief Inspector Matt Painter said: “The disorder seen in the town centre yesterday was completely unacceptable, however, officers quickly arrested three people in connection with the inicdent.

"Enquiries remain ongoing and we are working hard to identify anyone else who may have been involved.

"To support this work and to prevent any further incidents, a dispersal order is now in place across Shrewsbury town centre. This gives us additional powers to move people on where necessary and deal swiftly with anyone causing antisocial behaviour.

"Our officers will remain in the area throughout the day to provide reassurance and ensure the town remains a safe place for everyone.”

Anyone who has any information relating to the incident is asked to report it online here: https://orlo.uk/7gKDn or email Shrewsbury Central Safer Neighbourhood Team: [email protected]
