Extra garden waste collected for permit holders this November
Residents with a garden waste collection permit in South Oxfordshire or the Vale of White Horse can have extra garden waste collected for free. The collection will take place on their normal scheduled collection day between 2 November and 13 November 2026.
Permit holders can put out a maximum of four additional sacks of garden waste, per garden waste permit, presented next to their brown bin.
To be eligible for a collection, please follow this guidance:
• Only present natural garden waste, such as cut grass, plants or small branches.
• Please use standard-sized (60L) black refuse-style sacks which combined total no more than a standard bin full.
• Please DO NOT use bags larger than 60L (including one-tonne builders’ type waste bags) – crews will not collect garden waste from these as they are too heavy to lift into the vehicle.
• Sacks must be left untied so crews can easily empty them into the rear of the vehicle and check there are no contaminants.
All garden waste collected will be taken to a facility near Wallingford. The resulting compost is sold to local farmers for use on their farmland as a soil conditioner.
Cllr Sue Cooper, Cabinet Member for Environment at South Oxfordshire District Council, said: “We know many residents are busy tidying up their gardens in the autumn, so this is a great opportunity for permit holders to recycle that extra waste responsibly. By offering these additional collections, we’re making it easier for households to keep their gardens in good shape while ensuring garden waste is turned into valuable compost.”
Cllr Robert Clegg, Cabinet Member for Environmental Services, Climate Action and Nature Recovery at Vale of White Horse District Council, said: “We’re pleased to provide this service in the autumn, which helps residents clear their gardens before the winter. All the garden waste collected will be transformed into compost and used by local farmers – it’s a simple and sustainable way to return nutrients to the soil.”

Good morning residents,

The road works on Highworth road are Thames water as they are fixing a water leak.
From information gathered from Thames water today, they hope to finish the work in a day or 2 depending on the level of the leak. We will aim to keep residents updated. There are currently 2-way traffic lights, still allowing residents and through traffic.

Oxfordshire county council planned road works have now been postponed. Due to start on the 2nd November 2026.

Oxfordshire County Council are proposing to carry out Highway repair and maintenance works on Highworth Road, Shrivenham, Swindon.

These works are categorised as Major.

The road will be closed for some or all of the period and could cause delays to journeys.

The works will start on or after 2 November 2026 and could run through until 4 November 2026. The works will impact the carriageway only.

Make it a Green Hallowe’en: Simple Swaps to Cut Waste
With Hallowe’en around the corner, South Oxfordshire and Vale of White Horse District Councils are highlighting five easy ways residents can keep seasonal waste to a minimum this autumn.
Every October, tonnes of pumpkins, single wear synthetic costumes and plastic decorations are thrown away after just one evening. By rethinking how we prepare for the spookiest night of the year, households across the districts can save money while helping protect the local environment.
Five Simple Steps to Cut Hallowe’en Waste
• DIY costumes — Get creative by reusing clothes you already own, updating last year’s outfit, or crafting something new from materials around the house. It saves money and reduces waste.
• Borrow or buy second hand — Visit charity shops, borrow from friends, or host a neighbourhood costume swap to give pre loved outfits another life.
• Eat your pumpkin — Before carving, scoop out the flesh and cook something delicious. From soups and pies to roasted seeds, pumpkins are incredibly versatile.
• Compost, recycle or donate — Pumpkin flesh is great for composting when mixed with other materials. If you don’t compost, offer it to neighbours who do.
• Use the food waste collection — Leftover pumpkins will be collected for one week from 2 November. Chop them up and place them in your food waste bin, or leave them whole beside it. Remove candles, wax and decorations first. Pumpkins must not go in general rubbish.

Dear residents,

People’s emergency briefing on the Climate and Nature crisis

Following over 5000 showings nationally of the film People’s Emergency Briefing on the Climate and Nature Crisis and the recent success of screenings in Faringdon and Highworth, arrangements have been made for two showings in Shrivenham.

The dates are: Wednesday 18th November 7pm to 8.30 & Saturday 21st November 1.30pm to 3pm.

The venue: St Andrews Church
(The church has an excellent screen and sound system)

Tickets: are FREE but you will need a ticket as numbers will be restricted due to the seating capacity of the church.

After the film there will be an opportunity to discuss the content and how we as a community work together and what we can do to deal with the impacts of climate and nature crisis on everyday life.

The 50 minute film is hosted by the environmentalist Chris Packham and aims to break down severe threats to food security, public health, defence etc.,
This event is being coordinated by St Andrews Church, Shrivenham Methodist Church, Sustainable Shrivenham and supported by Shrivenham Parish Council.

📋 Planning Inquiry Summary Final Day - Thursday 8th October.
The final day of the inquiry started at 1pm 🕐, allowing time for the parties to finalise their closing statements ✍️ and allowing the Inspector to visit a couple of golf courses ⛳ referenced as being alternatives.
There was a short discussion 💬 to clarify the draft conditions that would be put in place should the inspector be minded to approve.

The rest of the day was spent hearing final closing statements from both sides 🔄. Due to their length and different views this summary will just outline the subject matter rather than the details of the arguments to avoid mis-representing. The full closing statements should be available on the Vale planning portal 🌐 for this application in a few days.
