We don't just treat birds and mammals. We recently had a few reptiles admitted into our care.

πŸͺ± We had a slow worm brought in following an encounter with a cat. Luckily the little one only suffered a few superficial scratches. The wounds were treated and following a few days rest and recuperation we were able to successfully return to the wild.

🀎 The slow worm is neither a worm nor a snake, but is, in fact, a legless lizard.

🐍 We also had a couple of grass snakes brought in. One was entangled in netting and the other was found trapped in a building. They don't appear to have any serious injuries so we will assess them for release very soon.

✨️ Reptiles experience heightened stress when confronted by a predators, in some cases, reptiles resort to dropping their tails as a defense mechanism.

❣️Some reptiles have the ability to regrow their tails, however, not all reptiles possess this regenerative ability, and the extent of tail regrowth varies among species and tissue damage.

This adorable little conker is our 1000th patient of the year! πŸ’–

πŸ¦” She is 1 of 5 hoglets brought into our care after the nest was disturbed and sadly mum didn’t return.

🀎 Hedgehog breeding season usually peaks in June and July, so these arrivals are a little early than anticipated. Athough, due to climate change the hoglet season can now begin in early spring.

🏨 At this vulnerable age and away from the comfort of their mum, their rehabilitation is uncertain. But we will do all we can to support them with regular feeds and assessments. Now in our care they are being hand reared and so far they are drinking their milk formula really well.

πŸ™ If you encounter a mother hedgehog with her babies in your garden, it is critical to leave the nest completely undisturbed. Distressing a mother can cause her to desert or even eat her young. Sometimes she will carry them in her mouth to a new location if she feels threatened.

✨️ These hoglets will be the first of many to arrive in our care this summer and will be reared alongside dozens of other wildlife orphans, with the hope of returning them back to the wild.

Our little long tailed tit fledgling, admitted into our care a few days ago, has developed into a sassy juvenile πŸ₯°

πŸ–€πŸ€ He is doing well and maintaining his weight. When you only weigh 7g, a few ounces lost or gained can make a difference. He is being reared in our bird room alongside other garden birds.

πŸͺΆ This little LTT is starting to develop his iconic long tail. These feathers are used to help with manoeuvrability, communication and stability. Thank you for your generous food donations 😊

πŸ₯° Desite capturing the hearts of our staff and volunteers, we are hopeful his rehabilitation will continue going well and he can be moved to an outside enclosure to prepare for release.

How many ticks can you count 😲

πŸ•·πŸͺ³ Fleas and ticks are common on most hedgehogs or other mammals, but a heavy parasite burden like this is a cause for concern.

πŸ˜” This can lead to lethargy, severe malnutrition, anemia, respiratory distress, and even death. It often indicates that the animal is suffering from an underlying illness, infection or injury, compromising their immune system and requiring urgent treatment.

🏨 If you see a hedgehog or small mammal with an overload of ticks then please call us or your local rescue centre for advice.

We have dozens and dozens of garden birds in our care at the moment and we are going through loads of food. πŸ¦β€β¬›

😲 Baby birds need feeding every 15-30 minutes depending on the age and species. As you can imagine that involves a lot of food and time to get through them all.

A few of our recent patients have fully recovered and been released πŸ˜€

πŸ¦… Our poor sparrowhawk that was admitted a few weeks ago after being found covered in poo from a slurry pit or muck spreader made a full recovery. After a few days building up strength in an outside flight aviary she was ready to return to the wild again.

🦌 A beautiful deer was rescued in very bad shape after a suspected road traffic collision. She suffered an injury to her eye. Despite concerns of vision loss we are thrilled to say she returned to full health and has been released.

πŸ°πŸ‡ The 2 gorgeous little leverets rescued and brought to us from Goodwood Flight School were hand-reared and recovered really well. A young rabbit picked up by a cat also recovered. They have now returned to the wild again following treatment.

πŸ™πŸ€© Our thanks to everyone involved in their rescue and recovery. We are thrilled we were able to help these challenging cases and release them back to where they belong.
