Wow! Yesterday was one of our busiest days this summer. 🫣

😲 We admitted 33 patients. Everything from mice injured in cat attacks, pigeons fallen from their nests to house martins found exhausted on the ground. We also answered, what felt like hundreds of phone calls giving advice about other animals.

🌞💔 The extreme heat is taking its toll on wildlife which is resulting in a surge of casualties. It has been a very busy start to the summer season, and there are no signs of it slowing down yet.

🚒👨‍🚒 We are also very grateful to the Sussex Volunteer Fire and Rescue for helping rescue wildlife casualties in need yesterday. They also kindly bought some of the team ice lollies to help us cool off. Much appreciated 👏

🙏 If you do find a wildlife casualty and are calling us for advice, please be patient with us and understanding of our busy situation. We are becoming very full on certain species.

We are very low on volunteers today, Friday. If anyone has a spare couple of hours and would like to help out we would really appreciate it.

Drop by the reception at any point today from 8:30am. We have a staff room and kitchen so you are welcome to bring your own lunch to store or make refreshments. The wards are very warm so wear something cool.

*Please note this is a volunteer opportunity to help feed and clean patients. Whilst we appreciate it might be a chance to see some animals up close, we have lots of poorly patients to look after so please only drop by if you are happy and prepared to help the animal care team. It is a very busy busy time of year!

With the extreme heat sweeping across it is important to keep our outdoor patients comfortable. 🌞

✨️🥵 Birds lack sweat glands, so they rely on a combination of behaviours and physical adaptations to cool themselves.

🐤🐥 💦 Here are just a few ways our ducklings are beating the heat. They have access to shelter, water pools to splash in and shady spots to chill in.

🪽 Ducks will also often lift or spread their wings slightly away from their bodies. This exposes areas with thinner feathers and allows air to circulate over their skin to dissipate heat.

🩺 During extreme weather we do extreme checks and monitoring to ensure they are coping well and not exposed to too much direct heat.

We are currently caring for this very poorly hedgehog.

🦔 He was suffering from laboured breathing possibly as a result of an infection. He also was very thin and dehydrated.

🤍 🩺 To support his breathing we placed him in an oxygen kennel. This is essentially a breathing mask for animals. The kennel is pumped with a steady flow of oxygen without causing any distress.

💊🏨 We also gave some antibiotics, fluids and food to help with recovery. He has started eating and showing improved breathing. Which are all promising signs of recovery. He has since moved out of the oxygen kennel and into a normal kennel for monitoring.

✨️ It is still early days and his prognosis is extremely uncertain but we will do all we can to support him.

🙏 We are currently in need of poultry flavoured dog and cat food for our patients. If you are able to help we would be so grateful.

We have taken in lots of woodpeckers this year including nearly a dozen great spotted woodpeckers. 😲

💚❤️ Our most recent patient admissions include these 2 juvenile green woodpeckers. They were found out of their nests at different locations.

✨️ The green woodpecker is the largest of the three woodpecker species. Unlike their noisy neighbours, the great spotted woodpecker, the green woodpeckers are rarely heard drumming. Instead, they make a loud, distinctive "laughing" sound to attract a mate or communicate.

🥰 Whilst they are not rare it is a special treat to spot a woodpecker in your garden. With increasing housing developments taking over their habitats it is becoming more common.

There's nothing more photogenic than a young fox cub growing into their ears 🥰

🦊 These stunning fox cubs are growing up so fast. Many arrived as tiny brown bundles of fluff but are developing into striking juvenile foxes.

🧡 They are being reared in our fox enclosure where they will learn essential skills and behaviours ready for their release.

🌳 Most of our fox cubs have been denied a natural start to their lives. So this final stage is arguably the most important part of their rehabilitation. If we make them tame or they do not learn essential foraging or socialising skills they will unlikely survive in the big wide world.

✨️ The final stages of their time with us will be very hands off. Interacting mostly to feed and clean patients as well as other general assessments.
