Although the has ended for now, we are still under a VERY HIGH wildfire risk. With tinder dry conditions and a small breeze, any small fires can develop quickly. In recent days we have seen bonfires leading to developing fires. Please don't light bonfires during this continuing dry spell, the embers from these can rise up into the air and land on tinder dry ground igniting the surrounding area in seconds.

No BBQs, No camping fires, and take your glass bottles home!

🔥 Woodland fire – Fire Beacon Hill, Sidmouth 🔥
Yesterday, crews from Sidmouth Fire Station , Ottery St Mary Fire Station and Seaton Fire Station attended a serious fire in woodland at Fire Beacon Hill.
The fire was caused by a barbecue being used on wooden decking within the woods. The flames spread from the decking into the surrounding structure and vegetation.
Access was extremely difficult because of the remote location and steep terrain. Firefighters had to carry equipment and establish a water supply over a considerable distance, making this a physically demanding incident for everyone involved.
Thankfully, crews brought the fire under control, but it could very easily have developed into a much larger wildfire, threatening surrounding woodland, wildlife, property and people.
⚠️ Please do not use barbecues or light fires in woodland or the countryside.
Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service advises:
🔥 Only use barbecues in safe, designated areas
🔥 Never place a barbecue on wood, grass or anything combustible
🔥 Keep barbecues well away from trees, fencing and dry vegetation
🔥 Never leave a barbecue unattended
🔥 Keep water or sand nearby
🔥 Ensure it is completely extinguished and cold before leaving or disposing of it
🔥 If a fire starts or begins to spread, move to safety and call 999
One barbecue in the wrong place can cause a devastating wildfire. Please have a picnic instead and help us protect our countryside.

Today (14/7/26), crews from Sidmouth, East Devon and Exeter attended a field fire caused by a bonfire on neighbouring land.

This is one of several incidents we have attended recently where bonfires have spread and caused fires.

Please think before lighting one.

🔥 Does it really need to be lit today?
☀️ Can it wait until the weather is cooler and conditions are safer?
🌾 What could happen if the fire spreads to neighbouring land, crops or property?

A small bonfire can quickly become a much bigger incident.

Please help us prevent avoidable fires.
