Embracing the prickly challenge! The Solway Coast National Landscape volunteers seized the opportunity of a sunny day yesterday, cutting gorse rides at Mawbray Banks to unlock the full potential of this stunning landscape. By breaking up the dense gorse stands we're clearing the way for a diverse range of vegetation to thrive. And with our conservation grazing team (the Belties) on the job too, we're confident that these new routes will remain open, offering breathtaking views of the Solway and Criffel for all to enjoy! 🌳💚

📣 Local volunteers wanted to help uncover Drumburgh's Roman past!

The Solway Coast National Landscape is funding an archaeological dig at Drumburgh through the Farming in Protected Landscapes (FiPL) programme, delivered by Grampus Heritage & Training .

We're particularly keen to encourage people from Drumburgh and the surrounding area to get involved. No previous experience is needed, as full training, tools and support will be provided. 🪏

Volunteer sessions run on weekdays from 9.30am to 4.00pm. Please bring your own lunch, waterproof clothing and sturdy boots. Days may be cancelled or finish early in the event of severe weather. Volunteer places are limited so you must book your volunteer day with the team at Grampus Heritage and Training.

This is a great opportunity to learn new skills, meet new people and help explore the rich Roman history of the Solway Coast. ✨

A busy day for our volunteer team at Crosscanonby Carr yesterday cutting and raking the small meadow and tidying the paths. And as a bonus we got a private demonstration from the West Cumbria Ringing Group who were just finishing their morning as we arrived Thanks as always to our fantastic volunteer team and all their efforts 💚

On Monday, our incredible National Landscape volunteers rolled up their sleeves and made a real difference at Beckfoot beach! 🌊 As part of the , they not only collected 5 bags of litter, parts of an old chair and a tyre, but also recorded everything they collected too. 🌟 By joining forces with the we're contributing to a vital dataset that's helping to shape a cleaner, brighter future for our coastlines. As always a huge thanks to our amazing volunteers for their tireless efforts! 💚

🌿🌾 A wonderful day exploring the history of the Solway Coast! 🏺🌿

Thank you to everyone who joined us on Saturday for a fantastic day celebrating local heritage.

The day began with a walk from Blue Dial Caravan Park to Milefortlet 21, where attendees learned how this Roman fortlet formed part of the coastal frontier extending beyond Hadrian's Wall. Standing at the site offered an opportunity to appreciate the important role the Solway Coast played in the Roman defences of Britain.

Back at Blue Dial farm, visitors enjoyed a fascinating historical cookery demonstration from John Crouch, who brought the past to life through traditional recipes, ingredients and cooking techniques. It was a real treat to discover how the Roman Army would have prepared and cooked food while in this area.

A huge thank you to John for sharing his knowledge and enthusiasm, Blue Dial Farm for the excellent venue and to everyone who attended and helped make it such an enjoyable day on the Solway!
