🌟 Volunteers’ Week 🌟
Today, we’re focusing on one of our amazing volunteers, Flying Officer Calum Stephens, who is currently at 439 Linlithgow Squadron RAF Air Cadets. Here’s his thoughts on being a volunteer:
“I joined the Air Cadets because of my grandfather’s connection with the ATC. He was a retired Wg Cdr for Edinburgh and South Scotland during the 1990s and later continued to serve as a Civilian Instructor at 1271 - Bathgate Squadron ATC. As a young child, I always enjoyed attending Remembrance Day parades and watching the smartly dressed cadets marching to and from the war memorial.
In 2016, I joined 1271 (Bathgate) Sqn and enjoyed a well-rounded cadet career, taking part in music, Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, road marching, and a variety of ceremonial engagements. As I approached the age of 20, I knew I wanted to remain part of this fantastic organisation and help provide the next generation of cadets with the same rewarding experiences that I had enjoyed.
In October 2024, I took command of 439 (Linlithgow) Sqn and, earlier this year, also took on the role of Wing Road Marching Officer for South East Scotland Wing Royal Air Force Air Cadets. These are two roles that I greatly enjoy, as they provide a balance between delivering engaging parade nights at squadron level and supporting the wider delivery of wing training and activities.
The organisation has provided me with a number of fantastic opportunities, both as a cadet and now as a member of staff. It has allowed me to continue my own personal development through qualifications such as Climbing Wall Instructor training via the HQ RAFAC scheme, as well as becoming a qualified Mental Health and Resilience Train the Trainer instructor.
Most importantly, volunteering with the RAF Air Cadets allows me to give something back to an organisation that has played such a significant role in my own development. Seeing cadets grow in confidence, develop new skills, and achieve things they never thought possible is incredibly rewarding and is the reason I continue to volunteer.”
Thank you, Calum, for your dedication to being a volunteer!
