RAFAC is made up of two areas:

Air Training Corps - The ATC is the RAF's cadet force, divided into six regions, 34 wings and more than 900 squadrons within communities around the UK. Combined Cadet Force (RAF) - The CCF (RAF) is our section of the CCF which is made up of cadets from all three services, coming together in approximately 200 independent and state schools across the country

🎨 A History-Making Volunteers' Week Celebration! 🌟

When looking back through their archives, No. 2353 (Ystrad Mynach) Squadron stumbled upon a brilliant piece of history; an illustration of the squadron staff from 1983, under the command of Flt Lt Brian Roach (OC 1980-1995).

Inspired by the past, they decided to create a modern entry into the squadron history books for and the results are absolutely fantastic!

Talented Cadet Eve Davidson put her artistic skills to work to illustrate the incredible, multi-faceted volunteers who keep the squadron running. Take a look at the picture to see her brilliant work capturing what the team gets up to inside and outside of RAFAC:

WO Fox-Mabe: Pitching in at RIAT Logs and a regular extended camp attendee! ⛺

Flt Lt Lewis (OC): Karate-chopping through the mountain of squadron admin to get stuff done! 🥋💼

Fg Off Evans: Taking to the water as a skilled paddlesport instructor! 🛶

WO King: Keeping standards high as a drill instructor, alongside his inseparable canine companion, Boss! 🐕

Capt. Pritchard (SI): Our fieldcraft instructor, who also happens to be part of the Army Skydiving Team! 🪂

CI Powell: Always dreaming up the next wacky, wonderful fundraising idea! ✈️🤪

CI Wearne: Teaching life-saving skills as a First Aid Instructor whilst tackling her 1st year of medical school! 🩺

Rev. Steadman (Chaplain): Sharing unique life skills and teaching cadets how to sew! 🪡

To say thank you, every single volunteer featured in this collage will be presented with a full-sized original copy of their illustration. 🖼️

Our volunteers give up their time to inspire the next generation, bringing their unique passions, skills, and humour to the Air Cadets every single day. We couldn't do it without you! 🙌

🌟 Volunteers’ Week 🌟

Today, we’re focusing on one of our amazing volunteers, Flying Officer Calum Stephens, who is currently at 439 Linlithgow Squadron RAF Air Cadets. Here’s his thoughts on being a volunteer:

“I joined the Air Cadets because of my grandfather’s connection with the ATC. He was a retired Wg Cdr for Edinburgh and South Scotland during the 1990s and later continued to serve as a Civilian Instructor at 1271 - Bathgate Squadron ATC. As a young child, I always enjoyed attending Remembrance Day parades and watching the smartly dressed cadets marching to and from the war memorial.

In 2016, I joined 1271 (Bathgate) Sqn and enjoyed a well-rounded cadet career, taking part in music, Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, road marching, and a variety of ceremonial engagements. As I approached the age of 20, I knew I wanted to remain part of this fantastic organisation and help provide the next generation of cadets with the same rewarding experiences that I had enjoyed.

In October 2024, I took command of 439 (Linlithgow) Sqn and, earlier this year, also took on the role of Wing Road Marching Officer for South East Scotland Wing Royal Air Force Air Cadets. These are two roles that I greatly enjoy, as they provide a balance between delivering engaging parade nights at squadron level and supporting the wider delivery of wing training and activities.

The organisation has provided me with a number of fantastic opportunities, both as a cadet and now as a member of staff. It has allowed me to continue my own personal development through qualifications such as Climbing Wall Instructor training via the HQ RAFAC scheme, as well as becoming a qualified Mental Health and Resilience Train the Trainer instructor.

Most importantly, volunteering with the RAF Air Cadets allows me to give something back to an organisation that has played such a significant role in my own development. Seeing cadets grow in confidence, develop new skills, and achieve things they never thought possible is incredibly rewarding and is the reason I continue to volunteer.”

Thank you, Calum, for your dedication to being a volunteer!

A big moment for RAFAC STEM this month! 🚀

The team has just delivered their first Bronze CREST Train the Trainer course at RAF Cosford — equipping instructors from across the organisation to bring a brand new STEM syllabus to cadets nationwide.

On the course, cadets will build and program their own robots using LEGO SPIKE Prime kits to tackle real Aerospace challenges — and earn a nationally recognised Bronze CREST Award in the process.
