If you need medical help over the long weekend, using the right service can save you time and ensure you get the best care. Here’s how to stay well and get support if you need it:

✅ Visit your local pharmacy – Many are open all weekend and can help with minor illnesses like coughs, colds, sore throats, UTIs, sinus infections, and skin conditions. Check which pharmacies are open near you via the link in the comments below.
✅ Use NHS 111 – Available 24/7 online or by phone for urgent advice, and to be directed to the right service, including urgent treatment centres and out-of-hours GPs.
✅ Only use A&E for life-threatening emergencies.

We are strongly urging people to take care of themselves and others in the upcoming heat conditions.

The vulnerable and those who are at-risk are more likely to suffer in the heat and could become seriously ill with health complications. However, in these conditions anyone could be at risk. Please take care of yourself.

Whilst we want everyone to enjoy this warm weather it is important that we all take simple steps to help us stay healthy at this time. It is easy to become dehydrated in hot weather as we can soon lose more fluid than we take in, and even people at the peak of physical fitness can become ill if they are not careful.

Drink cold non-alcoholic drinks regularly, keep out of the sun during the hottest times of the day between 11am – 3pm, and avoid physical exertion in the heat where possible.

People who are elderly, the very young and those with chronic conditions are more at risk, so please check on vulnerable friends and neighbours every day during the heatwave.

𝑩𝒐𝒘𝒆𝒍 𝒄𝒂𝒏𝒄𝒆𝒓 𝒘𝒆𝒍𝒍𝒃𝒆𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒆𝒗𝒆𝒏𝒕 𝒔𝒖𝒄𝒄𝒆𝒔𝒔 – 𝒔𝒖𝒑𝒑𝒐𝒓𝒕𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒑𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒆𝒏𝒕𝒔 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒔𝒉𝒂𝒓𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒍𝒆𝒂𝒓𝒏𝒊𝒏𝒈

On Tuesday 30 June the colorectal nursing service for Solihull, Heartlands and Good Hope hospitals, along with guest speakers, charities and industry partners delivered a highly engaging, informative, and powerful event for bowel cancer patients and their families at Solihull College & University Centre .

The event included presentations from those with lived experience of cancer, a marketplace and guest speakers discussing the latest in treatments.

The event which was held at Solihull College, was attended by over 70 people is the first in a series of initiatives to provide support and latest news around bowel cancer.

Nikki Jennings, Colorectal Clinical Nurse Specialist, said:
"Patient feedback was overwhelmingly positive, with many describing the event as "informative", "educational" and "inspirational".

"People particularly valued the opportunity to meet and talk with other patients, with many commenting that hearing others' experiences provided reassurance, support and encouragement.

"A huge thank you to everyone who attended and supported the day – we can’t wait for the next one!"

𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗔𝘀𝘀𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝗕𝗮𝗿𝗯𝗮𝗿𝗮 𝗰𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗯𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝘀 𝗮 𝘄𝗵𝗼𝗽𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝟱𝟮 𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘀’ 𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗡𝗛𝗦 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗶𝘀 𝗻𝗼𝘄 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗱𝘆 𝘁𝗼 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝗿𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁!

Bubbly and always smiling ‘Barbs’ gathered with colleagues and friends to celebrate her retirement yesterday. She started in the NHS in 1972, working in the laundry department pressing uniforms.

As her career progressed, she has worked in many different wards and departments, at one stage doing 28 years in elderly care at Heartlands Hospital.

Barbara moved to join us at Solihull Hospital in the Haematology and Oncology unit seven years ago and says she has loved being part of the Solihull team.

On her retirement, Barbara said “I always come to work with a smile. I have loved every single minute of being a healthcare assistant. I have made so many memories and had so many laughs. I’ve made friends for life in this team who have been so supportive to me especially during a difficult time with my husband’s illness.

“I want to say a huge thank you to my team, and my manager Ruth. You are all amazing and I’m going to miss you all!”

Help keep young people stay safe around water - especially when it's hot 🥵

The sunny weather can make it tempting to go for a swim but everyone should only swim where, and when, it's safe to do so.

Water can be much, much colder than it looks, even on hot days, which can affect everyone’s ability to swim. Children should never go swimming without an adult.

Top tips to stay safe:
✖️ Don't take any risks: You may think it is fun to play around in water unsupervised or to jump into lakes but it can be very dangerous and help or rescue may be a long way away.
💧 Look for lifeguards: If you are looking for a place to cool off, always find a swimming site that has a lifeguard, like a swimming pool or many beaches.
😰 Be extra careful around cold water: Water at open-water and inland sites is usually much colder than it looks. Cold water causes your body to go into shock - affecting your ability to swim and self-rescue.
🏊 Stay close to the edge: Always swim parallel to the shore, that way you're never too far away from safety.
🫶 Always stay near friends or family: If anything goes wrong, you've got someone there to help.
