Our Community Connections services help older people reduce loneliness, build confidence and enjoy meaningful social connections.

The services include:

- Short-term and medium-term support to build confidence to attend activities in the community
- Long-term befriending for the most isolated older residents
- Our own social groups and activities for over 65s including lunch clubs and coffee afternoons
- Walking groups for over 50s

All of us at Age UK are deeply saddened by the news that Dame Esther Rantzen DBE, who founded our Silver Line Helpline, has died. Esther was a true inspiration who helped support thousands of lonely older people through The Silver Line Helpline. We send our heartfelt condolences to Dame Esther's family 💜

Today is Older People's Day!

It's a day to celebrate the huge contribution older people make to our families, communities and society, and to recognise that everyone deserves to age with dignity, independence and connection.

At Age UK Solihull, we're proud to support older people across the borough through services including befriending and social activities that help reduce loneliness and keep people connected.

We are in need of support from the local community now more than ever, to keep our remaining services going for older people in Solihull who rely on us.

We are pleased to announce a new venue for our weekly Big Knit Group.

The group will now meet every Thursday from 1-3pm at Rose Nursing Home - Macc Care on Blossomfield Road, next to Solihull College.

Come and join us to make little hats for the Big Knit and help us reach our target of 15,000 hats!

The group is free to attend (although donations are very welcome), and there's no need to book. We provide patterns and hot drinks - just come along with your needles and wool (we do have a small amount of wool to offer if needed).

We would like to let Solihull residents know that from 1 October 2026, Age UK Solihull will no longer be the provider of the Solihull Information & Advice services.

The Solihull Information & Advice service, known now as Here2Help, has recently been awarded to another provider.

The current Solihull Community Advice Hubs at The Core and Chelmsley Wood Library will close on 30 September. From 1 October, residents seeking information and advice should contact Here2Help, who will provide support by telephone, email and through multiple face-to-face locations across the borough. To access support or find out more about venues in your area, please visit www.casb.org.uk or call 0121 788 6527.

Thank you to everyone who has used, supported and championed the Information & Advice services during the time we delivered them. We would also like to thank our incredibly knowledgeable Advisers and volunteers for making such a huge difference over the years.

Get involved this Older People's Day!

On 1 October, we're inviting individuals, businesses, schools and community groups across Solihull to support Age UK Solihull's Older People's Day campaign.

There are lots of ways to get involved:

- Wear a hat and make a donation
- Slip into Slippers for the day and donate
- Hold a bake sale, quiz, raffle or fundraising event
- Donate directly to support local older people

Every pound raised will help us continue supporting older people in Solihull through services that reduce loneliness, promote independence and provide vital advice and support.

Well done to Richard from Care Home - Barchester Healthcare who recently took on a tandem skydive in aid of Age UK Solihull, raising an incredible £840!

Charlotte Magill from Saxon Court Care Home and Bel Capper from Edwards Insurance Brokers have also completed skydives for us this year.

The support of these brave fundraisers helps make a huge difference to the lives of older people in Solihull, and we cannot thank them enough.

Help older people in Solihull with an adventure of a lifetime!

If you have been thinking of taking on a high-impact endurance challenge but have been worried about the costs, we have a fantastic opportunity for you.

The Givestar Adventure For Good Grant, is offering funding for individuals taking on an ambitious fundraising challenge.

With a £250,000 funding pot, successful applicants can receive support towards costs such as travel, equipment, permits and entry fees, helping them focus on their challenge while raising funds for Age UK Solihull.

You may be considering:
- an ultra-marathon
- a mountain summit
- an ocean row
- or another extraordinary endurance challenge

Whatever your idea is, this grant could help make it happen.

Past adventures have included skiing across Antarctica, rowing the Pacific Ocean, running 1,000km barefoot, swimming the length of the Thames, driving a tuk-tuk from London to North Cape, and the fastest two-man relay from Land's End to John O'Groats.

Applications close at midnight on 31 August 2026, so don't delay.

Thank you to Lounge who supported us during Lounge Aid month, through events, raffles and a hike up Snowdon!

A fantastic £878 was raised throughout the month, to help us provide our vital services for older people in Solihull.
