Are you looking to kickstart your career in planning? We have an exciting opportunity for an Assistant Planning Officer to join our friendly and forward-thinking Development Management team in our strategic projects team working on development across the UK Central Programme at Solihull Council.

This is a career-graded role, designed to help you grow and succeed. You’ll receive tailored training and dedicated support from experienced colleagues to develop your skills and progress in your planning career.

What you’ll do:
Deliver a timely, end-to-end planning service by processing planning and related applications, as well as permitted development enquiries.

Provide clear, professional communication and excellent customer service to applicants, stakeholders, and elected members throughout the planning process.

Ensure all applications meet Solihull Council’s procedural requirements and comply with planning legislation.

What we’re looking for:
• Minimum of 5 GCSEs (grades A–C / 4–9) or equivalent qualification.
• Experience in a customer service environment, with strong written, verbal, and telephone communication skills.
• Excellent interpersonal skills and resilience to handle and resolve challenging calls relating to dispute
• Strong organisational and prioritisation skills, with the ability to meet fixed deadlines.

Applicants must also be able to drive, have a driving licence and own a car (or have access to a suitable vehicle) that is appropriately insured for business purposes, however for disabled applicants, reasonable adjustments will be made where required.

We have an excellent opportunity for an experienced environmental Health Practitioner to join our busy and professional Environmental Compliance Team.

It’s an exciting time to be working in Solihull. Our central location and ambitious growth plans mean you’ll be involved in high‑profile projects, including preparations for High Speed 2 (HS2) and major commercial and residential developments across the borough, such as Birmingham Airport, the National Exhibition Centre and Arden Cross.

This is a unique opportunity to make a real difference across a socially and economically diverse borough, delivering a wide range of Environmental Health services that help protect residents and improve local communities.

The role will have a strong focus on private sector housing, including housing standards and the regulation of Houses in Multiple Occupation (HMOs). You will also be involved in tackling environmental crime and nuisance issues, as well as carrying out regulatory inspections, investigations, and enforcement activities.

Working as part of a proactive team, you will provide expert advice and guidance to residents, businesses, landlords, and other stakeholders. You will undertake inspections, investigate complaints, assess compliance with relevant legislation, and take appropriate enforcement action where necessary, ensuring a fair, consistent, and customer-focused approach at all times.

To be successful in this role, you will have:
• A degree (or equivalent) in Environmental Health or related subject
• Experience of providing regulatory advice and taking enforcement action
• Demonstrate strong knowledge of legal processes and evidence gathering
• Be confident working independently and as part of a team
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills, able to engage with a range of stakeholders and deal effectively with situations involving conflict.
• Knowledge and experience in the field of housing (desirable).
• A valid driving licence and access to a vehicle, to enable you to attend meetings and move around sites in the Borough where much of the team’s work is delivered.
