Have you discovered Hoopers Orchard at Tintinhull Garden yet? 🍏✨

Just a short stroll from the main garden and car park, this peaceful little space is accessed via Farm Street – only a couple of minutes’ walk.
The orchard sits beside the kitchen garden, and because livestock graze there, access is via the road only (and a quick gate‑close behind you helps keep everyone safe) 🐑🚪
It’s a lovely spot with a mix of characterful old trees and plenty of calm to enjoy. A perfect detour on your next visit 🌳

We are lucky at Lytes Cary Manor to be home to all three of the UK’s native newt species – the palmate newt, the smooth newt, and the UK’s largest and rarest, the great crested newt.

Spring is an important time for these prehistoric‑looking creatures. April and May mark their breeding season, and it’s also when the Ranger team carries out weekly surveys to monitor how the local populations are doing and ensure the team’s habitat work continues to support them.

One week the team was joined by Sarah D**e MP , the Parliamentary Species Champion for the great crested newt. Alongside Mark, the Lead Ranger, she helped check the survey traps and spent time discussing the conservation needs of this specially protected species – including the challenges posed by habitat loss and separation and why creating connected landscapes for wildlife is so important.

Everyone was pleased when the very first trap revealed a beautiful female great crested newt – a fantastic sign for the population here at Lytes Cary.

Let’s take a closer look at the lime trees at Lytes Cary Manor. Lime Tree Avenue is lined with 19 beautifully maintained trees that change character with every season. 🌳
Throughout the year, the gardening team gives them expert care: winter brings pleaching to remove new shoots, followed by more precise pruning in late spring and early summer around the base and lower trunk. This not only creates the clean, elegant look of the avenue, but also helps direct the tree’s energy into producing lush foliage higher up.

And the best bit? Those removed shoots don’t go to waste. You’ll spot them around the property being reused as sturdy plant supports for our potted displays.

We’ll be revisiting the avenue as it transforms through the seasons, so keep an eye out here – or even better, come and enjoy the trees in person at Lytes Cary Manor.
