Statement re Street Cleaning in East Boldon

We are aware of today’s discussion on Pride in East Boldon about street cleaning in the Front Street area of East Boldon.
Residents are rightly concerned about the lack of service in this area.
Your local Labour Team has repeatedly reported overflowing bins and unswept pavements along Front Street this year.
While the Streetscene Team respond quickly to these reports, a much better service is needed.
On 16 July, a Senior Manager from the Streetscene Team gave a presentation on the service to the West Shields and Cleadon Village and East Boldon Community Area Forum(CAF).
Your Labour Team raised these issues with them from the floor.
One of major issues is the organisation of the street cleaning areas.
The one serving East Boldon is based in Cleadon and the adjoining area is based in Boldon Colliery.
This leads to this area of East Boldon not being reached regularly enough.
We called upon this to be reviewed at the CAF and will take this up immediately with Council Officers once again.
East Boldon Deserves Better.

Labour calls out Reform UK decision to abandon South Tyneside Climate Emergency Declaration.

Statement by Dr John Temple on behalf of Cleadon Village and East Boldon Labour Party

South Tyneside Council’s decision to rescind its Climate Emergency Declaration is a massive step backwards, that undermines the borough’s future economic growth and public health improvement. Scrapping these targets does not protect our residents.
On the contrary, it actively stalls vital progress on green jobs, public health, and social justice. By pulling the plug on our climate framework, Reform UK is pursing ill informed, short-sighted governance that weakens the local structures needed to
attract green investment and build a modern, sustainable infrastructure.
Such neglect directly impacts public health, disproportionally harming vulnerable people living in cold, poorly insulated homes, whilst breathing in polluted air.
Instead of missing out on the future, South Tyneside needs a fair green transition that will bring about the creation of secure, unionised local jobs in home insulation, clean public transport and community energy projects. Abandoning our net-zero pledges completely isolates South Tyneside from regional environmental action and abdicates our collective duty to future generations.
We cannot allow Reform’s short-term political posturing to trade away a cleaner, fairer and healthier future for all of us.

Housing Sites Consultation

Dr John Temple and your Local Labour Team have attended both of the recent exhibitions held by the Church Commissioners in the ward.
They are part of the Church Commissioners consultation on their plans for the land that they own at Boker Lane, East Boldon and Sunderland Road / Moor Lane Cleadon.
This follows these sites being confirmed for housing in the Local Plan Inspector's Final Report . This now goes to the Council for final approval.
Your local Labour Party spoke against the allocation of these sites at the Local Plan Examination and achieved some improvements to the proposals , such as more affordable homes at East Boldon and nature based improvements to the remaining Green Belt land.
We are arguing for better footpath links from both sites to East Boldon Station and the village centres and the maximum amount of greenspace within these developments.
We have stressed the importance of tree lined streets to green these large sites.
Dr John Temple said 'The development of housing on both sites poses a severe socio-economic and environmental challenge to our existing local communities. The local Labour Party will continue to vigorously campaign for housing that prioritises local needs; critical infrastructure upgrades, including GP provision, school places and road safety measures and robust environmental protections to preserve our local biodiversity.'

Bridleway surface improvements completed – thanks to Labour.

A Labour campaign to improve conditions for walkers, cyclists and horse riders at a
popular local bridleway has ended in success.
Dr John Temple, on behalf of Cleadon Village and East Boldon Labour Party had
lobbied the local council to carry out repairs to the surface of a well-used section of
the East Boldon to Tyne Dock bridleway, between Station Approach and Tileshed
Lane, East Boldon. The work has now been carried out.
John Temple said, “Back in December 2025, I wrote to South Tyneside Council’s
Countryside Team, which is responsible for the maintenance of the bridleway, asking
them to make arrangements for the bridleway to be repaired. I am delighted to report
that my intervention has resulted in the potholes being filled and the surface of the
bridleway being restored. He continued, “The bridleway was in a very poor condition,
so I was pleased that the council has taken action following my intervention on
behalf of local people”.

The Rose Garden in Grange Park is looking a picture, especially with the addition of the mini sunflowers. Thanks to the volunteers from Friends of East Boldon Parks for your hard work in keeping this part of the park so nice.
In contrast it is sad to see the graffiti close tothe play area on the litter bin and the Friends notice board.
Your Labour team have reported this to the Council.
Labour care about our community, especially our lovely Green spaces.

👏 Congratulations to East Boldon Infant School on a wonderful Ofsted report. The headteacher, Lisa, staff and governors (volunteers - parents, community representatives inc from local Labour) work as a strong team to ensure children get the best start to their school life.

Labour fights for Cleadon Village and East Boldon

Cleadon Village and East Boldon Labour Party has made its presence felt at a meeting of the West Shields, Cleadon Village and East Boldon Community Area Forum (CAF) that took place on Thursday, 18 June at Winship Close Community Room, Whiteleas.

Dr John Temple, who unsuccessfully contested the ward for Labour at the recent local election, raised numerous issues at the meeting that had been brought to his attention by local residents during the election campaign. These included, the urgent necessity to resurface the unadopted lane to the rear of Front Street and Victoria Terrace, East Boldon; renewal of the footway on Whitburn Road, Cleadon Village; the need for dropped kerbs on St John’s Terrace, East Boldon to facilitate disability access and the implementation of appropriate traffic calming measures to ameliorate the effects of rat-running (to avoid the traffic lights at Blacks Corner), through Natley Avenue and St Georges Terrace, East Boldon.

John Temple said, “I was pleased to be able to attend the CAF meeting to raise these important matters that local people have told me they are concerned about. He continued, “The CAF has substantial resources available to it, and I have urged the councillors representing the area to consider using such monies to fund these important schemes."

At the same meeting, Labour kept up the pressure on Nexus not to impose car parking charges at East Boldon metro station. Merv Butler, who spoke on behalf of the Labour Party at the meeting, persuaded the CAF to write again to Nexus to set out its opposition to charging and the adverse effects such a move will have on both commuters and local residents. Similarly, John Temple, on behalf of Cleadon Village and East Boldon Labour Party has written to the lead member responsible for transport at the North-East Combined Authority, urging him to resist any attempt by Nexus to implement such charges.
